CONOR MCGREGOR TURNED 26 yesterday, but he won’t have been celebrating too hard with UFC Fight Night Dublin to come on Saturday.
The homegrown headline fighter takes on Diego Brandao in the O2, confident of continuing his progress in the featherweight ranks. The short documentary above takes us behind the scenes as McGregor prepares himself to beat the Brazilian.

“Now I’m back here and it’s my show,” he says. “I’m gonna blow the roof off this place, I’m gonna shut the show out. The whole country’s gonna shut down. Next year, we’ll do a football stadium for my title defence.”

I hope he gets smacked around!!
McGregor is a mouth piece who is fast turning into an embarrassment!! He was great craic at the start and now well he’s simply annoying!!
Dave – that’s all part of it though. Comparatively he’s good on the mic. Calling out Aldo, Swanson and Sanchez etc all garners headlines for mcgregor and the UFC. Which pleases Mr White.
If you think acting like d*ck is great ‘showmanship’,that’s fair enough. One of the reasons Dana Whte’s UFC will never be taken seriously,is the ability of certain fighters like Chael Sonnen(a repeated drugs cheat) to gain multiple title shots, based on his trash talking alone.
Mgregor has obviously taken that lesson to heart, but the truth is,he is not the most charismatic or funny guy around ,so don’t complain if he gains a lot of ‘haters’ among Irish people, with his trash talking, disrespecting his opponent shtick.
@Scarr What I mean by that is as regards the ‘mainstream’.UFC gets negligible coverage on sports providers like Sky or ESPN and hardly garners a mention in print media. This afteral is a sport that Dana White proclaimed,’would be bigger then soccer by 2018′.In fact since he made that insane statement a few years back,PPV numbers have dropping steadily.
Sonnen has been very open and honest about his TRT and how it’s affected his drug testing in the past. It’s even forced him into retirement. And as for the UFC not being taken seriously? Well you’ve proven your own ignorance with that line alone!
‘It’s even forced him into retirement.’ Sonnen got cut by the UFC because he tested positive for mulitple PEDs and there was nothing open or honest about it.He was caught plain and simple.
The UFC cut him because he was becoming a PR embarrasment even for them, after years of pushing him on the general public. It’s never a good idea to have a drugs cheat as one of the faces of your company.
No he retired. He made a statement, had to choose between changing his TRT and fighting and opted to continue his treatment in the hope of starting a family.
If the UFC are so embarressed by him then why is he still an analyst on their fight night program?
Eh Im thinking you must be just a casual fan, beacauseHe might of otherwise you might of known about one of the biggest bits of news in MMA this year.Chael Sonen has being cut from the UFC and cut from Fox due to failing multiple drug tests. http://mmajunkie.com/2014/06/following-second-failed-drug-test-ufc-and-fox-cut-ties-with-chael-sonnen
What was it you said in an ealier comment ;’Well you’ve proven your own ignorance with that line alone!’ Well that entire comment you wrote completely proves you ignorance on the sport of MMA,
To the best of my knowledge Scarr his contract was terminated by the UFC and Fox,both companies released a statement stating that much.
Maybe they have some kind of agreement/contract that Sonnen can return in the future as an analyst, when all this blows over?
Maybe. White might be hoping for it to blow over and get him back in. He certainly wouldn’t want another promo getting him.
I do think that UFC is currently missing “stars” – possibly due to saturation. Too many shows of late in my opinion. There doesn’t seem to be personalities like Bj penn, Liddell etc.
Agreed. The cards have got progressively worse as the UFC’s ‘expansion’ continues.5 or 6 stacked PPV cards a year is definitely better then 12 or 14 cards choc-full of meaningless fights with guys most people have never heard of. The heavy promotion of Rousey is just annoying.
GSP is pretty much retired and Silva is past his prime.Weidman his conqueror just doesn’t have that star power and unique unorthodox style that got Silva so much attention.
True, though I like rousey in a secret crush sort of way. Her promotion is smart though in terms of the female demographics. I read somewhere today( possibly here) that ashling something (irish female mma fighter) is in the ultimate fighter house now?
So they’re pushing the women’s mma too. The saturation might be a marketing tactic to stamp out competition in various countries before normal stacked cards resume. And Weidman needs to go. Machida (who I’m no fan of) was unlucky as he got out of the blocks too late.
I stopped watching the ultimate fighter years ago.I liked the first few seasons but for me it has become Big Brother with sanctioned fights, and the qualtiy of the fighters in the house has got steadily worse over the years.
If it’s a marketing tactic,it is one that is turning a lot of loyal fans off the UFC.Luckily in Ireland once you pay a BT subscription you get the UFC cards as part of it,but imagine being a US fan and paying 60 dollars for some of the dross they have put on in the last few years?
I watched the last season in part because of the Irish connection. And I liked the coaches (penn and Edgar). Season was ok.
I will say that 2 of the best fights ive seen ( possibly ever) have been this year. Matt browns fight against Silva and dillashaw v barao were both great.
Agreed. Thought he was great at first but he’s a complete and utter muppet! He knows how to play the game and could make more money than most if he’s the winner he thinks he is. I’m hoping for anything but that.
The way Mcgregor has acted the last few months, has turned a lot of people who should be his biggest fans right off him.His Chigago gangster accent, mixed with his penchant for US style trash talking is to blame for this. Now a lot of Irish people want to see him get knocked out.
It reminds of Naz or Eubank when British people wanted to see them get KTFO.
His accent when talking to Americans is a little weird but maybe he finds it easier to communicate with them that way. His mouthing is a tad annoying but I hope he does well.
I did want to see him do well as I like to see any Irish athlete being successful on an international stage, but the more he opens his mouth, the more I begin to dislike him.
I can understand that. I put his mouthing down to understanding how the game part of the fight-game works. Tbh I used to follow his Fb page but the constant bragging caused me to unfollow. Still, I’d like to see him do well if only for what it would do for the sport here.
Not everyone has to take the Mayweather approach to the fight game. And it only works for Mayweather because he never gets beaten. If Mgregor who is only starting off, gets beaten badly, even once, people might lose interest quickly,as the bragging becomes empty words.
The humble/modest approach can also work in the fight game.Manny Paquiao being a prime example.Respect your opponent and let your skills do the talking in the ring.
His constant bragging on fb?? What did you expect him to do, talk about the weather, or put up pics of his dog?
He’s using social media to the fullest to promote himself, as somebody mentioned above because the print media just aren’t there yet. And what he is doing is promoting to his already followers.
It’ll not be an easy fight, but the man is able to walk the walk, and not just rambling on.
He has been a fighter long before he was in UFC and fully deserves to be where he is. It’s easy commenting hoping he gets his ass kicked, so what does he have to do to win people over? If he says nothing, stays out of the limelight, then he won’t get the big fights, which in turn gives the publicity he actually needs.
Hope he continues “to look good and whoop ass” on Saturday…
Really looking forward yo this Saturday, self promotion is key to earning the nig bucks when fighting. He has talked himsrlf into headlining an evrnt after 2 pre show fights. Sold it out in minutes and getting his sport on free to air tv here. He will tear it up Saturday night.
All of the focus is on mcgregor, but keep an eye on gunni Nelson, doesn’t do the self promotion that mcgregor does but is as good or better than mcgregor. Good luck to both of them
He has talent. No doubt. I hope he does well but with all his mouthing I wouldn’t shed a tear if he was knocked lights out. Humility is not a commodity this lad possesses. Write it off as showmanship if you will but he has turned people off him with all his shite talk. I imagine he will try to make some scene at the weigh in Friday. Just more crap. Do it in the ring Conor and tone down the mouth outside. I’m a huge UFC fan since day one but this lad talks way too much
Blew out his knee? What a stupid phrase, hyperbolic! Blew out? Ruptured a ligament. Amateurs all over the country finish the match. Larry Tompkins did it in an all Ireland final and continued to kick frees. Tompkins is harder than this spoofer!
hope he wins, i spose u’ll all still keep winging and saying hes overrated then as well. Hes a professional fighter ffs they’re supposed to be cocky. Speaking of overrated, I wonder would poonsawat have destroyed mcgregor as quickly as he did bernard dunne?
Good luck to Conor on sat night the waffles only hype for the fight it’s all part of the showman side of the industry just see it for what it is and wish him luck
I agree he trash talks too much, if he beats Brandao he is legit, but disrespects seasoned proven winners is not smart, a long way to fall if he doesn’t live up to his own hype
UFC is a business and so is Comnor in using his marketing skills to eventually bring a world title fight to Ireland with a sell out crowd . His opponent he is hoping it will be Aldo! But I’m afraid he is a long shot off of that. I hope he is as good as his never ending tongue. Better in watch Irish soccer

With all of McGregors talk over the last few months he better have the skill to back it up… brandao ain’t gona be no work in the park
I hope he gets smacked around!!
McGregor is a mouth piece who is fast turning into an embarrassment!! He was great craic at the start and now well he’s simply annoying!!
Give him a break, as far as i’m concerned he’s the best thing to happen UFC for us. I enjoy the showmanship.

Scipio – afiak Sonnen still has some form of contract with UFC as reported by dana in a recent scrum, no?

It’s awful.
he sounds like a mixed up bollicks. he’ll be punished, no easy one this.
Ye but that’s just because he knows he’s going to win. I believe him
Looks the be a great fighter but what a complete knobhead!
Agreed. Thought he was great at first but he’s a complete and utter muppet! He knows how to play the game and could make more money than most if he’s the winner he thinks he is. I’m hoping for anything but that.

Mayweather is thoroughly dislikable! Golovkin or Pacman are at least as good if not better but have dignity unlike the wifebeater.
A football stadia for title defence, not Croke Park I hope!
He’s a cocky a s s hole. Hope he gets battered.
Really looking forward yo this Saturday, self promotion is key to earning the nig bucks when fighting. He has talked himsrlf into headlining an evrnt after 2 pre show fights. Sold it out in minutes and getting his sport on free to air tv here. He will tear it up Saturday night.

Spot on, Ruairi. Gunnar has a huge future in the UFC. Looked brilliant in his last fight against Akhmedov. Keeps getting better.
He has talent. No doubt. I hope he does well but with all his mouthing I wouldn’t shed a tear if he was knocked lights out. Humility is not a commodity this lad possesses. one minute he’s a yank, next he’s a dub. a hard one to listen to. totally up it.
Hope he does well. Can’t wait for Saturday.
Sick of him already!!
He can talk all he likes but he’ll always be 5’3″ shortarse & for all his gangsta shite he still lives wit his ma & da. Clown!!
Take away the fact that he’s Irish and his popularity would drop drastically.
In fairness his last fight was boring
That’s cos he blew out his knee in the middle of it so had to play it safe with a ground game to win.
Blew out his knee? What a stupid phrase, hyperbolic! Blew out? Ruptured a ligament. Amateurs all over the country finish the match. Larry Tompkins did it in an all Ireland final and continued to kick frees. Tompkins is harder than this spoofer!

What an idiot
Say that to his face….
That is your comment…. Really?? Moron!!
From the same school of thought as ‘how can you comment on football when you’ve never played professionally’
????
????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
This guy has a high opinion of himself. Cage fighting is a clowns sport
its very boring
Ringside seats can’t wait.
Whats up with the fake accent??
Yea Conor you can do it.Bring on Sat night fast.
Good luck to Conor on sat night the waffles only hype for the fight it’s all part of the showman side of the industry just see it for what it is and wish him luck
Will this be shown on Setanta Ireland or is it pay per view ?
It’s on 3e!
AFAIK it’s on 3e
It’s free on 3E or you can watch it on fightpass.
It’s on 3e, I really hope they invest in HD soon if they keep showing sport, the RWC will be tough to watch if not!
Conor has turned into an awful mouthpiece. Not nice to see. Hasn’t fought since his. Knee injury….Brandao could hand him his arse
Fights no bodies. Can’t wait until he comes up against the big boys in his weight.
the reason clowns are in traveling circuses is because people get bored of their shtick really quick
I always support our fellow irish men and women in anything they do but I hope this head case gets knocked the f**k out in round 1
