IT SEEMS AN obvious strategy. If you want people to pay attention to you in the UFC featherweight division, call out Conor McGregor.
That’s the approach taken by one-time title challenger Ricardo Lamas who wants to face the Irishman in his next UFC fight.
Lamas has even vowed to keep his training up in case McGregor’s Boston opponent, Dennis Siver, can’t take part in the bout.
“I’m going to get right back in the gym and keep up with my conditioning, just in case,” Lamas, told MMAjunkie Radio.
Lamas went on to say he isn’t necessarily looking for a title rematch with Jose Aldo but would like to teach McGregor a lesson, suggesting the Irish fighter has been protected by the UFC in his career so far.
“He’s had a lot of smart things to say on Twitter, and that didn’t go unnoticed by me, so it’s time for the UFC to give him a wrestler and stop protecting him from wrestlers
“Maybe get his people to stop asking the UFC to not match him up with wrestlers.”
Lamas, of course, was referring to this tweet from McGregor last weekend:
However, Lamas did praise McGregor for his self-promotion and support he has garnered from Irish fans.
“He does a good job of marketing himself, and he does bring in the numbers for pay-per-view buys.
“The guy has an entire country behind him, so that makes a huge difference. The UFC is a business, and if you make them money, they’re going to make you money.”
