AFTER HIS FIRST round TKO of Dustin Poirier on Saturday night, MMA fans are dying to find out who Ireland’s Conor McGregor will face next as he closes in on a title shot.
Early this morning, the Dubliner seemingly sprung a surprise by announcing on Twitter that he was heading to Mexico to take on Diego Sanchez on 15 November.
McGregor’s coach John Kavanagh is currently in Stockholm preparing for Saturday night’s event with Gunnar Nelson and Cathal Pendred. Kavanagh first tweeted: “I guess I’m going to Mexico”, but then followed it up with a ‘trollface‘, suggesting McGregor was winding followers up.
ESPN are also reporting that they spoke to UFC president Dana White via text message, who said: “That kid is nuts. No, he’s not. He wants to, but he’s not.”
While McGregor has talked before about fighting in divisions other than featherweight, a match-up with 32-year-old Sanchez would appear to be a strange move as it would mean having to step up in weight division at a time when he is causing such a stir among the featherweights.
Moreover, Sanchez is also due to face Northern Ireland’s Norman Parke at UFC 180 that night and there has been no news of a withdrawal.
Those are the facts, we’ll bring you more when we get it.
