Connacht hit back at Schmidt’s comments

THE ONGOING ROW between Connacht and Leinster following Mike McCarthy’s decision to join the Heineken Cup champions continued Thursday evening with the Connacht CEO, Tom Sears, hitting back at comments made by Leinster coach Joe Schmidt earlier in the day.

When asked if he was disappointed Leinster’s reputation had been questioned, Schmidt replied:

“I’m massively disappointed because we’ve done everything by the book. Mike is certainly not the only player to express an interest to come to Leinster. I mean that’s a natural thing, to a degree, where there is one team that is consistently performing at the top end.”

He went on to say he believed that Leinster’s success over the last number of years has actually benefited Connacht.

However, in a statement this evening, Connacht’s Tom Sears made it clear he didn’t agree with the Leinster coach.

“We have the utmost respect for Joe Schmidt and what he has achieved at Leinster. Joe is perfectly entitled to his views and we wouldn’t expect him to say anything else.

“It is interesting to note that he sees these actions as good for Irish Rugby. We would take a very different view that the constant targeting of our senior players, if allowed to continue, will have a detrimental effect on the IRFU’s desire to see four strong provinces representing Irish Rugby and producing players for the National Squad.”

In relation to approaches to players, Sears had this to say:

“Regarding comments made on the protocols to approach players from another province, we do not believe the protocols are sufficient or serve Irish Rugby well and I know the IRFU have recently discussed reviewing these in the near future”

The IRFU may well have more than just approaches to players to worry about in the near future if this row continues to rumble on.

  • There is an issue that needs to be addressed here with regard to player retention in Connacht but this is the worse possible time to be discussing it. It’s the week of the H Cup back to backs and Connacht are in with a very good shout of a 1/4 final spot if they win in France. The 80 minutes on the pitch should be the only thing anyone in Connacht is thinking about this week. Instead this tit for tat nonsense is a massive distraction from what could be Connacht’s biggest European moment. If things don’t go well in Biarritz this will have definitely be seen as part of the reason.

IMO Sears has a valid gripe but is aiming it at the wrong parties. The other provinces would be neglectful in not looking after themselves. The issue here is the IRFU. They need to support Connacht better. They need to make it more attractive to stay.

Ireland needs as many successful provs as possible to compete with the bigger nations. I’d go further to say we need 5 teams. The IRFU should look to strike a deal with say London Irish. A deal to pay a certain percentage of an IQ’d players salary or similar. Then the national coach would have 5 teams to choose from….

Yes the cost would come from the other provinces but the big 3 are more capable of supporting themselves financially.

Mind you…Connor O Shea suggested the same years ago but like now the Irfu were fixated on the big 2 at the time….

  • Why not question the existing protocols instead of bitching about Leinster or any of the other Provincial Clubs to which his players might migrate.

    • migrate? more like pillaged.

    • No, Padraig – migrate. Schmidt didn’t put a gun to McCarthy’s head and force him to sign, Mike left of his own free will, and regardless of what Sears or others may think, his claim to McCarthy or any other players services lasts only as long as their contract, at which point they are free to go where ever they want. This kind of childish, churlish sniping at the other provinces can’t be doing morale in the Connacht squad any favours.
