City plan Munich tribute ahead of Bayern clash

A delegation of Manchester City officials will visit a Munich memorial to those who tragically died in the 1958 Air Crash.

THE RED AND blue halves of Manchester will briefly unite tomorrow as a delegation of Manchester City officials lay a wreath in memory of the Munich Air Disaster.

Twenty-three people, including eight of United’s celebrated “Busby Babes”, died in February 1958 when a plane returning home from a European Cup tie in Belgrade crashed at Munich-Reim Airport.

The Eastlands club are in the Bavarian capital ahead of tomorrow evening’s Champions League meeting with Bayern Munich and officials plan to commemorate “Manchester’s loss” with a visit to the Manchesterplatz memorial, the Daily Telegraph reports.

The tribute comes at a time when the rivalry between the two clubs is at its most intense in decades.

With United only able to manage a 1-1 draw away to Stoke on Saturday, City’s 2-0 win at home to Everton saw them return to the summit of the Premier League table alongside their neighbours.

The two sides have already played out one thrilling encounter this season, with United snatching a last-gasp 3-2 win in one of the most competitive Community Shields in recent memory.

Alongside the tremendous on-field battles, a nastier edge to the rivalry has persisted however, and both clubs will hope that City’s timely gesture minimizes the potential for any disorder when the sides meet at Old Trafford on 23 October.
