'He's a kid that wants to soak up everything' - Ciaran Sheehan praised for progress in Oz

The ex Cork player has been praised for his performances for Northern Blues.

EX-CORK FOOTBALLER Ciaran Sheehan has drawn praise from the Northern Blues coach for his progress since switching to Australian Rules earlier this year.

23 year-old Sheehan, an All-Ireland winner with the Rebels in 2010, joined AFL side Carlton on a two-year contract in January but has been involved this season with Northern Blues, Carlton’s affiliate club in the Victorian Football League.

Northern Blues lost their fourth successive game in the league last Saturday after having won their opening three matches when the campaign began in April.

But Sheehan’s development was highlighted by coach Luke Webster in the aftermath of the game following Sheehan’s from attack to defence in recent weeks.

“He’s progressing really well,” Webster told the Melbourne Herald Sun.

“He’s a kid that really wants to soak up everything that he can get his hands on. We started him forward and now we’ve played him back and he’s been really good down there and made some really good decisions.

“He’s still continuing to learn and develop his own game but I thought (on Saturday) he defended really well and tried to give us some run and kicking skills off half-back.”

Sheehan previously spent four weeks during the summer of 2009 training with Carlton but opted not to sign with them full-time, citing homesickness as a key factor in his decision to return to pursue a career in the GAA.

He is one of three Irish players currently involved with the club along with Zach Tuohy of Laois and Ciaran Byrne of Louth.

Eh, yes we have. Shay Given, Paul McGrath, Ronnie Whelan, Niall Quinn, should I keep going?

How are they better servants? On a par maybe. Surely not better though.

Ronnie Whelan had a poor international career as did many of his contemporaries at Liverpool despite been world class players.

Jack didn’t fancy Whelan, or anyone that was inclined to knock the ball around on the ground. Not that being in 2WC and EC squads is really that bad an international career, anyway.

Fair play! Nice to see a bit of humour. Those awards can be dire shite the best of times.

Robbie has the appearances record for Ireland and the goal scoring record for Ireland. In fact he has obliterated the goal scoring one. Always disappoints me that some people won’t give him the credit he deserves.

I wouldn’t even mention Robbie Keane in the same breath as Paul Mc Grath, Kevin Moran, Ronnie Whelan or Liam Brady. Ok so he has the goal scoring record. I’d probably have it too if I had about 130 caps. I didn’t bother check how much he has. He’s good at scoring off the field though. His wife isn’t bad. I’ll probably get a pile of red thumbs for that but I don’t care

8 goals in 9 games in 2013 maybe?…. 6 of which were in the qualifiers… out of 6 games played.
