Cian O'Connor replaces Lynch in Irish Olympic team

O’Connor takes the place of Denis Lynch who was withdrawn this week after his gelding Latinus was disqualified at an event in Germany because of ‘hypersensitivity’.

CIAN O’CONNOR WILL compete in the upcoming Olympic Games in London, the Olympic Council of Ireland have confirmed.

O’Connor takes the place of Denis Lynch who was withdrawn yesterday after his gelding Latinus was disqualified at an event in Germany because of ‘hypersensitivity’.

O’Connor won gold at the Athens Games in 2004 with his mount Waterford Crystal but lost the medal after the horse subsequently tested positive for banned substances.

“The Olympic Council of Ireland has approved Horse Sport Ireland’s nomination of Cian O’Connor as the second Irish show jumping rider for the Olympic Games in London,” a statement from the OCI reads.

“The nomination was made by Horse Sport Ireland’s show jumping Chef D’Equipe Robert Splaine for the combination of Cian O’Connor and his horse Blue Loyd. Ireland will now be represented by Billy Twomey and Cian O’Connor in the individual show jumping event in Greenwich, London, which commences on August 5th.”

Last night Tipperary man, Lynch said the diagnosis was made after cuts and abrasions that the horse received in competition on Wednesday. Lantinus was passed fit to compete in the Nations Cup on Thursday, but tested positive for hypersensitivity on Friday morning and was disqualified from the event.

Explainer: What is hypersensitivity in horses?

Totally agree. The man has no shame.

Funny thing is the journal (this is off topic) will allow you to say o Connor is a disgrace but go earlier on today and you said that about travellers it would be deleted the comment.

Anyway apart from appalling ethics by the journal. The idea of this guy being sent to olympics is total joke. Wonder what will happen to sample B this time

In reply to James: so you’re saying that differentiating between criticism of a single man on the basis of factual evidence and a minority group of individuals is appalling ethics from the Journal?

James, it saddens me that there are people like you out there who can’t see the distinction between slating a single person due to his actions and slating an entire group of people due to the actions of some..

Only in Ireland would it happen that one cheater is replaced with another cheater. Cian O’Connor had his chance in 2004 and brought shame upon the nation, not to mention the debacle which ensued during which the horse’s urine samples were stolen from a laboratory in the middle of the night in an attempt to cover up the whole sorry episode.

Someone else should have gotten a chance to compete rather than a proven cheater.

Wow ANOTHER comment deleted. I’m done with this site. Nazi Germany had more freedom and less censorship.

Really wish the journal would instead put effort into moderating the Facebook page where is is appalling personal attacks.

Absolutely scandalous. If it was another country we’d all be laughing about how idiotic they are replacing a suspected cheater with a proven cheater. Unbelievable.

Brian, O’Connor was part of a farce back in 2004, and proven guilty. And may I remind you it’s only slander if it isn’t true. You obviously have no pride nor respect for our country of you’re going cheer on that proven cheater.

I suggest that more readers go back and read the explanation of hypersensitivity in horses and also the statement by Denis Lynch before some people may be sued for slander or liable making false accusations towards Mr Lynch and also read into the sport more before posting some comments. I will however cheer on Cian and wish him the best in the Olympics along with the Irish team.

If you understand the equestrian show jumping industry and how tests and ingredients in some things work what can be classed as cheating is a very fine line to something as simple as a wrong horse treat or food and as for Denis his horse had naturally occurring hypersensitivity which is not cheating and took place due to the horse taking part whilst being slightly injured and he was free to take part in other events please read the statements thank you
