Cian O’Connor jumps clear into final round

The Meath-based rider will have a shot at a medal in this afternoon’s second jump at Greenwich Park.

CIAN O’CONNOR NEEDED a timely stroke of good fortune to make it to the start line of the Olympic showjumping final on Wednesday afternoon.

Once there the Meath-based rider took full advantage, riding a clear round on Blue Loyd to guarantee his place in this afternoon’s medal decider.

O’Connor sat just outside the automatic qualification places after three qualifying rounds earlier this week but as first reserve, he got the call to compete when Sweden’s Rolf-Goran Bengtsson was forced to withdraw his horse Casall from the final.

All of the riders’ totals were reset to zero penalty points, with today’s two jumps deciding the medal placings.

Jumping second O’Connor put in a faultless round, dipping just inside the allowed time to ensure automatic qualification for this afternoon’s all-important second jump.

Round B begins in Greenwich Park at 2.55pm.

Much easier to commentate than manage.
I do admire him for jumping in though, Meath are just a shambles. It’s strange, they have such a large playing population, if they got their act together on structure and pathways, they could regularly challenge Dublin

@Conor Mulloy: I think politics plays to big a part Conor. Both he and McEntee wouldn’t pick players from certain clubs

@Conor Mulloy: came across really well as a manager..wanted his players to actually enjoy playing the game which is slightly unusual in the current footballing environment!!!

@James Dowling: ya never a truer word said. One would often hear the term about a GAA team these days, that they are a well oiled machine. In other words they are overly trained robots

A big loss to Meath football.
Player power rears its ugly head once again. Let them get their people in.
The results will not change dramatically.
