LEINSTER FORWARDS COACH Jonno Gibbes has revealed the province intend to start prop Cian Healy against Treviso on Saturday.

Healy received a three week ban from the IRB citing commissioners yesterday following a stamp on English forward Dan Coles during Ireland’s 12-6 home loss.

The IRFU are considering an appeal against the ban, which will see Healy miss Six Nations games against Scotland and France.

Gibbes told TheScore.ie, “He’s certainly available.

“Joe [Schmidt] and Declan Kidney have been in touch to discuss the international players. I would certainly be delighted to have him back.

“Cian will be one of those guys they’ve discussed that will be considered.”

Asked if he had any issues with starting a player while questions still remain over the validity of his ban, Gibbes remarked, “Not for me.” He added:

There are complications for others maybe. Cian is just like the other international players that are in consideration [for the game].”

No bone throwing

Speaking about the decision to ban Healy for three weeks but delay it so that he misses the France home tie on 9 March, Gibbes said, “Nothing really is surprising when a judiciary is involved.

“You go into them with an open mind.”

It is expected that the home against Treviso will feature backs Luke Fitzgerald an Fergus McFadden, who are both vying for game time to impress their claims upon Kidney for an Ireland start against the Scots.

Gibbes gave no more away, commenting that he has too much respect for Treviso coach Franco Smith ‘to throw him a bone.”

  • Great news for Leinster.

  • Healy should count himself damn lucky he didn’t get more then three. The Irish scrum will suffer but I’m confident Kilcoyne will hold his own if called upon.

  • Martin and Brian,

kop on. the IRB decided to postpone his ban until Sunday to try and penalize the Irish team. if they’re too stupid to realise it frees him for club duty on Saturday, that’s not Leinster’s fault.

as for the McSorely’s incident that’s being alluded to, was he charged with anything? is he the subject of a criminal investigation? or is it based on hearsay and conjecture? if it’s the latter two, grow up and move on.

    • Rob with all due respect, to comment on something which you have no involvement in and didn’t witness speaks volumes for the qualities you possess, or lack of, should I say. Finally, your argument lacks no credibility. Healy has a history of violence in his game. Take for instance the junior cup game against clongowes when he was sent off for eye gouging. I think it’s the Independent you have a saying ‘before you make up your mind, open it’. Well before you make up your mind on stamping, look at the facts.

    • Just to point out you are commenting on something you have no involvement in.

If BOD was cited for a stamp, banned for 3 weeks, then picked again, would Leinster be disgracing themselves? Would I be condoning barbarism as you put it?

Is your point that any ban for stamping should be a life ban? Or do you just not like cian Healy?

    • This man has played hundreds of hours of live rugby on tv for the whole world to see and you claim his violent history by quoting a game played when he was About 15 that no one has footage of?
If healy should be banned for life for a game he played about a decade ago I am going to my local guarda station to hand myself in. My mother told me while in the womb I kicked and punched her repeatly for about 6 months. I guess by your reconing 25 years in mountjoy would be fair punishment for such a violent barbaric crime.

    Because?

    • Leinster are doing nothing wrong, he is not suspended until Sunday so he is free to play rugby for any team until then. What do you suggest Martin? Never playing him again?

As for alleged off field skirmishes, they could not be more irrelevant

    • Would you be ok if he was eye-gouging!? No? So then why is trying to break someone’s ankle ok!? And Leinster are culpable as well. They’ve tolerated his thuggery off the pitch and know they’re going to do the same on the pitch. Disgraceful…

    • Lads you really need to calm down. He committed an act of foul play, got cited, got banned. If you disagree with the length of ban or start date of the ban that’s one thing.

But to say he should never play again & Leinster are supporting and encouraging thuggery is ridiculous.

It’s fairly obvious your personal feelings towards the guy are completely obstructing any chance of rational thought. I can only assume you were on this sight calling for John Hayes to never play again after getting a redcard for stamping on healy’s face? Or Quinlan after being found guilty of gouging?

By your logic Munster are also a disgrace (which they are not) and if needs be an example of so called ‘supporting thuggery’ could be given for any team in the world.

    • I never said you were a Munster fan, I used them as an example.

This alleged mcsorleys incident you keep referring to is irrelevant. This is an article about on pitch behaviour and leinsters ability to choose from eligible players. His disciplinary record prior to today was exemplary.

If your dislike for a player is enough for you not to support Leinster then you shouldn’t return to the RDS

    • Doing nothing wrong by the letter of the law, but what about the spirit? You must be desensitised to the violence which is suffocating the game at the moment. No wonder you’re condoning this barbarism.

  • It does make a joke of the whole citation process. If he had a ban for Leinster, would be allowed play in international matches ? No!!!

  • Absolute disgrace! Once again we are seeing the rugby establishment turn a blind eye to complete thuggery! Cole’s ankle could have been snapped in half! What, so he’s now free to snap the leg of a Treviso player!? Leinster should be ashamed of themselves…

  • I think in fairness although Leinster will technically not be in the wrong if the play Healy, they will be wrong according to the ‘spirit’ of the law. The reason a three week ban has been imposed is to take in the two Internationals. They obviously feel missing the two games is warranted. They also factored in the fact he would not have ‘normally’ be considered for the Pro 12. However it does still same strange. As an aside the offence itself was rather more than petulant.
