FORMER GAA PRESIDENT Christy Cooney is bidding this weekend to claim championship silverware as a manager and steer his home club Youghal to the senior hurling ranks in Cork.
Cooney served as President of the association between 2009 and 2012 before being succeeded by Liam O’Neill last year.
This season Cooney took up the managerial reins of his club Youghal, based in the town on the Cork-Waterford border, and they are now 60 minutes away from climbing to senior level in Cork.
On Saturday night in Páirc Uí Rinn in Cork they face Castlelyons in the final of the county premier intermediate hurling championship.
Youghal lost the final of this competition two years ago when they were under the guidance of Peter Queally, the former Waterford senior hurler who is currently tipped to take over as Deise boss for the 2014 campaign.
But Youghal have bounced back this year in Cooney’s debut season as manager, despite losing their opening round tie, and have come through the backdoor to reach the decider.
They meet a Castlelyons team that will include former Cork senior hurlers Timmy McCarthy and Ciaran McGann.
