AS IT HAPPENED

As it happened: Chelsea v Manchester City, Barclay's Premier League

We’ll have every kick of the ball as City and Chelsea battle it out for a place in the top four.

Could Jose Mourinho keep up his remarkable record of 64 league games without defeat at Stamford Bridge or would Manchester City finally improve their away form under Manuel Pellegrini?

As always, we’d love to hear your thoughts on the game. E-mail steven@thescore.ie, tweet @thescore_iepost a message to our Facebook wall, or leave a comment below.

Full time: Chelsea 2 – 1 Manchester City

Good afternoon and welcome to what should be an interesting game between two sides that many felt would sit slightly higher in the table than they do right now.

Still, a win today catapults the winner into a least third place so it’s not as if either are struggling like, say, Manchester United.

As always, we’d love to hear how you think it’s going to go so let us know in the comments below.

Here’s are the teams for today’s game:

Chelsea: Cech; Ivanovic, Cahill, Terry, Cole; Ramires, Lampard; Hazard, Oscar, Schurrle; Torres. Subs: Schwarzer, Azpilicueta, D Luiz, Mikel, Willian, Mata, Eto’o.

Manchester City: Hart, Zabaleta, Demichelis, Nastasic, Clichy, Garcia, Fernandinho, Nasri, Yaya Toure, Silva, Aguero. Subs: Pantilimon, Navas, Kolarov, Dzeko, Negredo, Milner, Richards.

Interesting stats about the lack of goals from Chelsea’s strikers on Sky just now:

We’re just five minutes from kick-off now. Given Chelsea’s home record and City’s struggles on the road, it’s difficult to see anything other than a home win here, but let’s see.

Chelsea get the game underway with Torres and Oscar on a windy day in London.

Calamity at the back there for City as Demichelis, making his debut, gives away a needless corner and Gary Cahill very nearly makes them pay from the resulting corner. However, the away side survive.

Chelsea have been the better side in the opening five minutes but neither side have created anything resembling a clear cut chance as yet. Cahill will probably feel he should have done better with his volley but you feel both sides will have plenty of chances in this one.

Nice play for David Silva to create some space down the left hand side of the Stamford Bridge pitch but Fernandinho’s attempt at a clever one-two doesn’t come off and the ball goes harmlessly wide.

Nasri has a chance for City but he pulls his shot wide. Referee Howard Webb had awarded a free kick against the visitors in the build up.

It’s early stages yet but, if either team do need to make a change, the combined value of both benches is nearly €250 million so you’d hope someone would make an impact if they were brought on.

City win two corners in quick succession but neither of Silva’s deliveries would be good enough for park football, let alone the Premier League.

Just how hard is it to beat the first man when you’re paid hundreds of thousands of Euro a week?

Terrible set-pieces aside, City are growing into this game. However, the midfield may well collapse into itself and form a supermassive black hole if it becomes any more condensed.

Aguero has the game’s first shot on target but it’s a tame effort as the Argentinian is falling over as he tries to poke home at the near post.

They win another corner seconds later after great work from Toure and though Silva’s delivery is much better, nothing comes from it in the end.

Frank Lampard picks up the game’s first booking and it appears to have been for being old and slow. It was probably the right call from Howard Webb though as there have been a few niggly fouls upsetting the flow of the game.

Zabaleta picks up City’s first yellow. These fans are not impressed:

WHAT. A. MISS.

Eight yards out, only Joe Hart to beat and Fernando Torres blazes the ball over when it looked easier to score. Will Chelsea regret not taking that chance?

City are winning the battle of the yellow cards after Nastasic makes it 2-1 on that count.

GOAL – Schurrle, 33 mins

Torres makes up for his miss with a brilliant piece of play to set Schurrle up for the easiest of finishes.

That really was great play from Torres and shows just what the Spaniard is capable of.

This game was crying out for width and Torres gave it by skipping down the right to beats Clichy and firing a great ball across the box.

That miss has sparked Torres into life. This time, raiding down the left, his powerful shot rattled off the crossbar. City are reeling. If Chelsea get another before half-time that could be all she wrote.

Yaya Toure has a great chance to pull one back for City but he can’t direct his header and, with just injury time remaining, it looks as if Chelsea will go in 1-0 up at half time.

And yup, despite Toure’s effort from distance that sailed wide, the first half has ended and it’s the home side who lead.

I’m off to have some half time oranges.

And the second half is underway.

There looks to be no changes to either side but if Torres continues to torment Clichy the way he did in the first half, City could have no choice soon.

What do you make of this? An evolution of his skillset or a change of roles to make up for his lack of goals?

GOAL – Aguero, 49mins

Well that was unexpected. A brilliant run from Sergio Aguero beats the Chelsea offside trap and Peter Cech watches as the Argentinian’s shot flies past him at the near post.

Ramires makes it 2-2 on the yellow card count and while David Silva’s free is met by Javi Garcia, it’s a weak header and easily saved by Cech.

Howard Webb’s actually had a good game and did well not to book Hazard there after it initially looked as if the Chelsea midfielder had dived. However, on replay he tripped over himself so it was the correct decision.

Garcia is the latest name to go into the book. Lampard’s free kick is met by John Terry at the back post but he can’t scoop it back and it sails over.

30 minutes to go here and lots of questions remain unanswered.

Can either side find that extra edge?

Can Torres break his Premier League drought?

How’s Joe Hart’s dandruff?

Petr Cech makes a good save from David Silva. Martin Tyler seems to think that makes amends for his horrible mistake for the City goal but wouldn’t he have to score one himself to really do that?

Mourinho makes the first changes of the game as Schurrle and Lampard head off for Chelsea as Willian and Mikel come on.

Chelsea have a free kick in good position after Fernando Torres is fouled by Fernandinho.

Oscar’s effort is still sailing through the London night sky.

Nasri is replaced by Jesus Navas as City make their first change with just over 20 minutes to play.

Gary Cahill does really well there when faced with a two-on-two with Navas and Aguero.

No-nonsense, efficient defending from the Chelsea player.

Joe Hart had a real go at the City wall for being out of position there but it came to nothing as Chelsea opted for a cross rather than shot.

Ramires with a speculative effort from distance but he can’t find the target.

Kolarov is on for City as they opt to take Javi Garcia — who was on a booking — off.

Hazard is off and Eto’o on as Chelsea make their final change.

For those wondering if anyone will find a winner, it’s worth noting that Chelsea have scored more goals in the last 15 minutes of Premier League matches this season (five) than anyone else.

Negredo replaces Aguero for City as Chelsea have a free kick in a dangerous position.

Just over three minutes to go but Willian’s effort is poor and sails wide.

GOAL – Torres, 90 mins

Nastasic and Joe Hart give Fernando Torres and early Christmas present as they combine to leave the Spaniard with the simplest of tap ins from three yards.

It’s schoolboy stuff from City but no more than Torres deserves.

Ricky Hatton wasn’t happy with the City defending for that goal:

And that’s it, it’s all over, Chelsea have leapfrogged Liverpool and sit second in the Premier League table, just two points behind Arsenal.

That’s City’s third defeat away from home already this season and Manuel Pellegrini will have to sort that out quickly if they are to be title challengers this year.

While Torres deserved his goal, the result is hard on City who did enough in the second half to get the draw.

However, Joe Hart had no business coming for that ball and Torres took his chance well to score just his second league goal of 2013.

That’s it from me. Thanks for joining us for today’s game. We’ll have a full wrap of all today’s Premier League action later this evening.
