Last gasp van Persie strike salvages a point for United

The United skipper silenced his critics with a priceless equaliser as it ended 1-1 at Old Trafford.

ROBIN VAN PERSIE struck deep into injury-time to salvage a point for Manchester United and deny Chelsea an eight Premier League win of the season.

The Dutch striker fired home from five yards in the 93rd minute after Branislav Ivanovic was sent-off for a second yellow card. From the subsequent free-kick, Marouane Fellaini header was parried by Thibaut Courtois but the United captain was on hand to deny the visitors at the death.

It had looked like Chelsea would extend their lead at the top of the Premier League to six points through Didier Drogba’s header but United rallied late-on.

Injuries to Diego Costa and Loic Remy left Jose Mourinho with Drogba as his only fit striker and the 36-year-old certainly hasn’t let his manager down.

Moments after David de Gea made a brilliant save to deny Eden Hazard, Drogda rose highest at the front post to head home.

It was Drogba’s first Premier League goal since his return to Stamford Bridge.
