Lampard comes back to haunt Chelsea and end Mourinho’s perfect start

A late goal from Frank Lampard against his former club ensured the points were shared.

Updated at 18.45

FRANK LAMPARD SCORED against former club Chelsea to earn 10-man Manchester City a 1-1 draw with Jose Mourinho’s side at Eastlands today.

Substitute Andre Schurrle put visitors Chelsea ahead shortly after City’s Pablo Zabaleta was sent off for a second bookable offence.

Premier League leaders Chelsea looked set to pull off a fifth straight league win in as many games this season to move eight points clear of the champions.

But Lampard, on loan from New York City after ending his 12-year stint at Chelsea, turned in from James Milner’s cross five minutes from time — not long after coming off the bench.

The result left Chelsea three points clear of second-placed Southampton.

Much like their 1-0 win at Eastlands in February, Chelsea were prepared to soak up City’s pressure and hope they took their chance when it came.

And when Schurrle fired them ahead in the 71st minute, it was Chelsea’s first shot on target.

But Lampard, who was substituted at half-time in his first City appearance in the 2-2 draw at Arsenal last weekend, made a crucial contribution.

After losing to Bayern Munich in the Champions League in midweek, City were determined to make the early running, with Edin Dzeko planting a header wide of goal from Aleskandar Kolarov’s cross.

- Costa-Kompany battle -

David Silva also picked out Yaya Toure at the near post with a corner but the Ivorian’s header lacked the power to trouble Thibaut Courtois.

Much had been made in the build-up of the contest between Chelsea’s Spain striker Diego Costa and City captain Vincent Kompany.

Their first battle did not disappoint with central defender Kompany just managing to shrug off the forward and earn a free-kick in a memorable tussle.

Chelsea were content to let City have the ball and when Aleksandar Kolarov’s cross was blocked to the edge of the area, Fernandinho sliced wide from a good position.

Sergio Aguero drove over on the half-volley after Chelsea failed to clear Silva’s cross, but the hosts were being limited to half-chances.

Chelsea finally showed some threat when Cesc Fabregas clipped in a free-kick from the right.

Gary Cahill won the ball in the air and the visitors had sustained appeals for a penalty against Yaya Toure.

They also went close with another set-piece as Cahill again got his head to the ball but Fernandinho’s touch took the ball away from Costa, who was waiting to turn in at the far post.

City continued to dominate after the break and had a penalty appeal themselves, when Toure ran around Branislav Ivanovic and went down under the Serbian’s challenge in the area.

City debutant Eliaquim Mangala laid off for Fernandinho and the Brazilian midfielder thumped wide from the edge of the area.

Chelsea eventually struggled with the pressure and when Aguero’s shot was blocked by Courtois, Ramires pulled off a fine interception to deny Dzeko.

But Manuel Pellegrini’s side were reduced to 10 men midway through the second half when Zabaleta caught Costa and was shown a second yellow card.

Chelsea responded almost immediately and a flowing move saw them cut through the hosts’ defence before Costa fed the ball right for Hazard to cross for Schurrle to tap in at the far post.

The visitors began to look even more of a threat on the counter-attack and when Schurrle found Costa the striker’s low effort was deflected on to the post.

As City attempted to claw their way back, Silva drifted in from the right and his low effort flew just past Courtois’s post.

But just as Chelsea looked set to cruise to victory, Lampard got on the end of Milner’s cross to score his first City goal.

Lampard then came close to snatching the win when his low effort was blocked in the area by John Terry, before Didier Drogba thumped well over with a free-kick at the other end.

It’s very rare that Chelsea fans show any class but Lampard got a great reaction from them at the end of the game. Still a top player!

Yes, us Chelsea fans never show any class. Like how we burned Mata shirts when he left, unlike Liverpool and Arsenal fans graciously wishing players like Torres and Nasri luck after leaving.

Oh wait, is that the right way around?

Chelsea fan here. A very small minority or chelsea fans are absolute wretched vermin who align themselves to combat 18 and are vocally racist, violent etc. These are the same guys that shouted during a minutes silence for hills borough victims last season.

Can’t excuse Liverpool fans so you turn to Torres being a flop.

I hadn’t even mentioned the collective Liverpool defence of Suarez after everything. The classiest moment must have been the thousands of fans booing Evra because he was racially abused by their hero. Chelsea have a small minority of classless fans, Liverpool have far, far more.

Orange Order Loyal. You seem like a real level headed decent fella with that username.

Didn’t Chelsea have a minutes silence for Ian Paisley a few weeks ago, many of them are proper Irish and Catholic hating thugs yet they worship ex players like Zola, who was actually a Roman Catholic.

Hmm, funny how you picked up on that not the booing of a racial victim!

I don’t really see what a few men did in 1988 has to do with anything today – emotions were high, the club were relegated. I could always throw Heysel etc. back at you but I don’t see what would be the point.

One of them, no doubt. We’ve been lucky enough to see legends like himself, Osgood, Zola, Cooke, Nevin, Drogba, Terry, Cech. No Chelsea fan has anything bad to say about him.

I presume by proved you mean proved innocent, because that’s what happened. Some stupid FA tribunal isn’t above a court of law, you know. I believe the judge’s words were along the lines of “John Terry isn’t a racist, it’s just a question of if what he said was intended as a racial insult.” Don’t let populist belief cover over the truth.

We idolise JT because he gives 100% every time he pulls on the jersey, simple. Suarez basically admitted to being a racist and all the Scouse could do was support him and blame everyone they could, even Evra!

Not digging, just stating facts, but as soccer fans, we will always have rose tinted glasses. Chelsea did do a great job in ridding the hooligan element, Suarez is a dumb child. Brilliant football brain, that’s about it, but Terry knew how to use racial taunting to antagonize an opponent. Both of them them deserved the punishment. It was sad stroke on Dalglish’s legacy but however they stood by the player. Not right but they did get a great season and great money for him. But you smear a lot of Liverpool fans under the same brush, maybe because being a club that is supported a lot, it may seem like that, but Chelsea fans have let there club down too…. The way they treated Avram grant was a disgrace, he should have been the one to bring home the CL, if not for another slipper…..

You’re not stating facts your making up stories, a la Terry being found guilty. Then just ignoring when I correct you, like with fans booing Evra. Presumably millions of pounds were pumped into that court case from both sides and the Judge decided Terry was innocent. But if you want him to have been guilty then believe what you want. Heck, believe he stabbed him on the pitch if you want, it would be as truthful as the drivel your spouting now.

Then you defend the indefensible by basically saying it was okay to support a racist and boo a victim because “they did get a great season and great money for him”. Says it all really.

Avram Grant only got the job to see out the season because he was a yes man. If someone fails at West Ham and Portsmouth they’re not good enough for Chelsea.

ps I expect your next comment to ignore everything I’ve just said and be simply “Benitez is a great manager and Chelsea fans should have embraced him after he won a mickey mouse cup and struggled to third place”. Let’s see if I’m right.

Guilty by the FA, innocent in a court of law you can decided which is the higher court. At least he doesn’t bite chunks out of people when he has a bad day.

As I said, Suarez was found guilty by the FA. Liverpool accepted that. The damage was done, Dalglish paid the price. The booing of Evra? Not needed, but any set of fans in the same situation would do the same, you know it. Yes, Suarez bites, disgusting. So is banging team mates girl, but you worship JT like a god, while looking down upon everyone else. Avram was very unfortunate not to win CL, but the things Chelsea fans said….. Vile….

Look Graham this is getting tedious. As for the pub jibe, I didn’t think a personal insult was necessary but if you must feel free to. I won’t lose any sleep over it.

Liverpool didn’t accept it, am I right in saying they appealed the decision? No set of fans would so publicly defend a man after he admitted to being a racist, biting etc. And what Terry did in his own time 5 years ago doesn’t bother me.

Yes he was unfortunate, so was I not to win the lotto last week. What exactly did these Chelsea fans say? To call anything like that vile but to brush off defending a racist is laughable.

Fair enough Aidan, but I do feel like you are putting words in my mouth. I am not defending Suarez, I am ashamed at what he put the club through. I am not sure Liverpool appealed it, I think they considered it, but in the end the owners forced Suarez into publicly accepting it, as the team was seriously being dragged through the dirt. No set of fans are saints, through out history all have done something wrong. Apologies for the pub jibe too….
