Explainer: Who needs what to progress to the Champions League knockout stages?

While Chelsea are already into the last 16, Arsenal must seal qualification away to Napoli tonight.

Group E

LIKE THE ENGLISH clubs last night, Chelsea go into their final group game knowing they are guaranteed a place in the round of 16.

A win for Jose Mourinho’s men against visiting Steaua Bucharest will ensure they finish in top spot while the Romanians are resigned to bottom place whatever this evening’s result.

Schalke and Basel meet in Gelsenkirchen and, with the Bundesliga outfit trailing their opponents by a point, a win would earn them qualification.

Group F

Arsenal are the only Premier League side still not confirmed as one of the teams in the knockout stages but they do lead Group F by three points and will definitely go through if they avoid defeat away to Napoli.

The Italians are level on nine points with Borussia Dortmund but with an inferior goal difference, Rafa Benitez’s side need to record a better result than last year’s beaten finalists.

If Napoli do manage to beat Arsenal by three or more goals and Dortmund see off Marseille, who are out of the running on zero points, the Gunners would finish in the Europa League spot.

Group G

Athletico Madrid can rest easy with a game to go as a seven-point gap separates themselves and second-placed Zenit St Petersburg.

Diego Simeone’s side welcome Porto to the Vicente Calderon with the Portuguese giants, on five points, needing both a win and Zenit, a point ahead, to slip up away to Austria Wien – who won’t be going past the group stages on their first attempt.

Group H

Barcelona need just a point at home to Celtic to go through as Group H winners. The Hoops, meanwhile, are destined to go out of Europe irrespective of what happens.

At the San Siro, second-placed AC Milan host Ajax who are a point behind them and hoping to earn qualification with a famous win.
