UEFA HAVE HIT Celtic with a €15,000 fine for the behaviour of a section of their fans at a Europa League fixture.
Some of the Glasgow club’s supporters were found guilty of participating in pro-IRA chanting by the Strathclyde police commanders during the game on 3 November with French side Rennes at Celtic Park.
After an investigation and, subsequently, Friday’s decision to sanction the club over what they called ‘illicit chanting’, UEFA’s Control and Disciplinary Committee announced the size of the fine this afternoon.
The club have yet to comment on the ruling but did release a statement last month when it was revealed that the game was to be looked into.
“We have been made aware of this hearing in a letter from Uefa. We have not been given any detail on the nature of the alleged incidents and have not received any information on this matter directly from the police,” the statement read.
“Celtic supporters have a magnificent record of positive support for their team, something recognised by both Uefa and Fifa in recent years and we are extremely proud of this reputation. Therefore, the club will co-operate fully with any Uefa investigation.”
