Celebrities line up for Liverpool protest video

Liverpudlians from real life and the TV screen join forces in a video urging Tom Hicks to sell the club.

DOZENS OF LIVERPUDLIAN celebrities, footballers and fans have come together to create a new YouTube video in which they demand that their beloved Liverpool Football Club be sold by its American co-owners.

The ‘Dear Mr Hicks’ video, referring to one of the owners, Tom Hicks, features Royle Family stars Ricky Tomlinson and Sue Johnston, as well as comedian John Bishop and former Ireland footballer John Aldridge – all of whom plead with Hicks to offload his share of the club.

The video – uploaded late last night – was the brainchild of director Mike Jefferies, creator of the Goal! series of films and himself a Liverpool fan.

Jefferies told the Daily Mirror last week that there were…

…millions of supporters who can not accept their club being touted as a product like a soft drink. The viral is already building massive momentum and there is a real feeling now amongst the fanbase. But they don’t care, they don’t care about our club – except its valuation.

There is no sign in the video, however, of Samuel L Jackson or actor Mike Myers, both of whom are Liverpool fans and who were reported to be involved in the video.

Liverpool owe £282m (€324m) to the Royal Bank of Scotland – debt taken out by Hicks and co-owner George Gillett – which is set to mature on October 15.

If the debt cannot be repaid or serviced, the club will likely be repossessed by the bank – a move that could see the club enter administration and face a nine-point penalty. Liverpool currently lie 18th in the Premier League after seven games. It is reported tonight, however, that the club has received two credible bidders in the last 24 hours.
