Cathal Miller selected as flag bearer for Irish Paralympic Team

The Dublin cyclist finished fourth in the 2010 world championships and is ‘delighted’ with his selection.

CATHAL MILLER HAS been selected as the Flag Bearer for the Irish Paralympic Team for the opening ceremony of the London2012 Paralympic Games.

Miller was selected by a ballot of Irish Paralympic team athletes and will follow in the footsteps of Patrice Dockery, the 6 time Paralympian, who lead out the Irish team in Beijing four years ago.

Miller will carry the flag for Team Ireland during the opening ceremony at the Olympic Stadium on 29 August.

The Artane cyclist is participating in his second Paralympic Games having competed in Beijing in 2008.

In London, the 43-year-old will compete in the C5 Track 1km Time Trial and 4km Individual Pursuit and in the C5 Road Time Trial and Road Race.

Cycling pedigree

In 2011, Miller secured bronze in the Sydney leg of the UCI Road World Cup and finished fourth in the 2010 World Championships. He said:

I am absolutely delighted to be leading the Irish Paralympic Team out at the London Games.  It is a huge honour for me, my family and all my supporters.

“To be chosen by my fellow athletes makes it all the more special as there is a phenomenal amount of talent and experience in this Irish Team.”

Paralympics Ireland chief executive, Liam Harbison, commented, “I am delighted for Cathal on his selection as the official flag bearer for the Irish Team.

“It’ll be a huge honour to lead the Irish Team into the Opening Ceremony on 29 August in front of a packed house and following in the footsteps of Katie Taylor at the Olympics.”

Annalise Murphy: I’ll work so hard and hopefully be ready to win at Rio 2016
