Carrickshock and Clara set to contest Kilkenny senior hurling final

The pair triumphed over Ballyhale Shamrocks and St Martin’s in today’s semi-final ties at Nowlan Park.

CARRICKSHOCK WILL FACE Clara in a novel pairing in this year’s Kilkenny senior hurling final after today’s semi-final clashes.

Both clubs won their ties in Nowlan Park to set up a final tie at the venue on Sunday October 27th.

Carrickshock were 4-14 to 2-14 winners over reigning champions Ballyhale Shamrocks in their semi-final clash while Clara got the better of St Martin’s in the opening semi-final tie by 1-17 to 1-14.

Carrickshock will be aiming for their first title win since 1951 while Clara, who won the All-Ireland club intermediate title last February, will be aiming to add to their only Kilkenny senior hurling crown which was claimed in 1986.

Carrickshock started brightly in their semi-final clash with Richie Power and Michael Rice on target as they flew into a 0-6 to 0-1 lead early on.

A 13th minute goal from Colin Fennelly helped Ballyhale bounce back and Henry Shefflin added points. But John Power fired home a goal to help Carrickshock lead 1-9 to 1-5 at the break.

But the match turned in Carrickshock’s favour midway through the second-half when Michael Rohan fired home a brace of goals.

A TJ Reid goal and a point soon after by Shefflin left Ballyhale only three points adrift, 3-14 to 2-14, with three minutes remaining. But substitute Niall Rohan hit the clinching late goal for Carrickshock to seal their passage to the decider.

In the first match, James Nolan’s goal with six minutes remaining was the vital score as Clara won out by three points against St Martin’s.

St Martin’s had lead by 1-6 to 0-8 at the break with Canice Maher firing home their goal. Keith Hogan’s point-taking kept Clara in touch and they drew level during the second-half.

The game was delicately balanced in the closing stages before Hogan pounced for the crucial score to propel last year’s Kilkenny intermediate champions into this year’s final.
