Capital One Cup wrap: Arsenal through on penalties, holders Swansea go out

Meanwhile, the draw for the fourth round has been made tonight.

Updated at 22.55

CURRENT CAPITAL ONE Cup holders Swansea are out of the competition after going down 3-0 to 2011 champions Birmingham.

Second half goals from Dan Burns, Matt Green and Tom Adeyemi handed the Swans defeat despite Wilfried Bony adding a consolation in injury time.

At The Hawthorns, a young Arsenal side set up a fourth round meeting with Chelsea after coming away with a victory over West Brom after extra-time.

German youngster Thomas Eisfeld had put the Gunners ahead on the 61st minute but Saido Berahino drew level for the Baggies before extra-time beckoned.

With neither side able to find a winner, a penalty shootout was needed and Spanish full-back Nacho Monreal scored the decisive spot-kick in a 4-3 win.

Stephen Ireland hit his first goal since 2011 to secure Stoke City a 2-0 win over Tranmere Rovers.

The midfielder had not found the back of the net for 634 days since scoring for Aston Villa at Chelsea, but he struck in the 22nd minute at Prenton Park to help book Stoke’s place in the fourth round.

Tranmere threatened in the second half as Stoke began to tire, but their finishing failed to test visiting goalkeeper Thomas Sorensen, before Peter Crouch added a last-minute winner to put a gloss on the result.

Papiss Cisse broke his Newcastle United scoring duck for the season as they eased past Leeds United 2-0.

Alan Pardew’s men had defeated Morecambe in the previous round, but faced a sterner test against a Leeds side renowned for causing upsets in cup competitions in recent years.

The Championship outfit did give a good account of themselves, but Newcastle were always in command, cruising to a comfortable victory.

While Javier Hernandez’s volley on 46 minutes handed Manchester United a 1-0 win over Liverpool at Old Trafford, Arsenal and West Brom are currently contesting extra-time after finishing 1-1 in 90 minutes.

Fourth round draw:

  • Sunderland v Southampton
  • Leicester City v Fulham
  • Birmingham v Stoke
  • Manchester United v Norwich
  • Burnley v West Ham
  • Arsenal v Chelsea
  • Tottenham v Hull
  • Newcastle v Man City

All ties to be played week commencing October 28
