Capello appointed Russia manager

The Italian will take over from Dick Advocaat but has yet to sign a contract, the Russian Football Union said today.

THE RUSSIAN FOOTBALL Union (RFU) on Monday appointed Italian coach Fabio Capello as new national manager to revive the flagging fortunes of the team, the RFU deputy president Nikita Simonyan said.

“Today we decided to appoint Capello as our national team’s new manager,” Simonyan told ITAR-TASS news agency. “We expect him to come to Moscow in the nearest future to finalise the details of his contract and sign it.”

66-year-old Capello has been out of a job since leaving the England set-up in February and the announcement was expected after he travelled to Moscow last Thursday to hold talks.

Russia qualified for Euro 2012 under Dick Advocaat but failed to make it out of Group A after suffering defeat to Greece in their final game.

They have been grouped with Portugal, Israel, Northern Ireland, Azerbaigan and Luxembourg for the World Cup 2014 qualication phase.
