INCOMING FERMANAGH MANAGER Peter Canavan has promised to promote “hard work and endeavour” as the county bid improve on their recent dire form.
Speaking on Today FM’s The Last Word, Canavan described his new role as “a massive challenge” and said people have told him he “must be mad to take the job”.
However Canavan is confident he has the ability to cope with the demands of the task, despite his relative lack of experience in top level management:
“I’ve been managing teams for 17 or 18 years, I’ve been a teacher in Holy Trinity since 1993, so I’m well used to dealing with all sorts of personalities.“I’ve a learnt a lot from managers I’ve played under and it’s no coincidence that all the successful ones had a very professional backroom team and a very professional management style.”
However, Canavan stressed the importance of all players making themselves available for selection, saying:
“They’ve failed to reach their true potential and had a turbulent year last year… If I can get the best players in the county to make themselves available, then we can make progress.”
Canavan enjoyed numerous successes with Tyrone as a player, winning two All-Ireland medals and picking up six All Star awards.
