SYCERIKA MCMAHON IMPROVED her personal best in the 200m individual medley final at the British Swimming Championships, but still fell far short of the Olympic “A” standard time.
McMahon started strongly and was second at the 50m split, but the 16-year-old was eventually reeled in by her more experienced opponents and finished seventh in a time of 2:16.05.
That time shaved another nine-hundredths of a second off her previous best, set in yesterday’s heats. Wexford’s Gráinne Murphy followed her home in eighth place in a time of 2:16.89.
Murphy will be back in the water for the heats of the 800m freestyle on Thursday morning, although she has already achieved the Olympic qualifying time.
In the final of the 200m guest freestyle yesterday, Melanie Nocher finished eighth in a time of 2:01.55.
This morning, Castlebar’s Nicholas Quinn set a new personal best in the 200m breaststroke heats. Quinn had the 21st fastest time in qualifying, finishing in 2:17.22.
The championships continue in London’s Aquatics Centre until Saturday.
