Brian O’Driscoll sets Grand Slam target in revealing Late Late interview

The Leinster and Ireland star told Ryan Tubridy his first thought upon seeing wife Amy Huberman was ‘she’s fit’.

IRELAND CENTRE BRIAN O’DRISCOLL has set his sights high for the final year of his professional rugby career. During an appearance on the Late Late Show, O’Driscoll targeted a Six Nations Grand Slam and a victory over the world champion All Blacks in November.

Speaking to Ryan Tubridy on the RTÉ talk show, Ireland’s record try-scorer confirmed he would be hanging up his rugby boots at the end of the season. He insisted he would not be around for a fifth tilt at the World Cup, in 2015, before adding Ireland would not ‘have a bigger cheerleader than me if they get into the final’.

“It is going to be the last year but I don’t want it to be the long goodbye,” said O’Driscoll. The 34-year-old remarked that success had made him selfish, stressing a desire to win ever pot his club and country are in the mix for this season.

Winning a Six Nations Grand Slam, he reasoned, is far from easy but capturing his second Six Nations crown is an achievable goal. Add that to the double — Pro12 and Heineken Cup — he wants to win with Leinster in 2014. Yet O’Driscoll is not finished there. He declared:

I get one more crack at the All Blacks and, please God, [Ireland coach] Joe Schmidt will think of me in terms of selection… No Irish team, no national team, has ever beaten them.”

O’Driscoll needed no reminding that Munster beat a touring All Blacks side in the 1978 and allowed himself to picture the plaudits that would await Ireland if they topple them at the Aviva Stadium next month.

O’Driscoll also touched on his experiences with the Lions during the summer, including his controversial axing. He brought his gumshield along to the Third Test against Australia in case Welsh centre Jamie Roberts pulled up with a late injury. “I thought the lads would think I was mental if brought my boots,” he joked.

Ultimately, he added, thoughts of his wife, Amy Huberman, and daughter, Sadie, brought him out of a brief period of sullen reflection. He said, “You have perspective when little people come into your life. You take the best things you have and let them overshadow your disappointment.”

Huberman, sitting in the Late Late audience, revealed she watched O’Driscoll and Ireland take on England from her hospital bed, hours after giving birth to Sadie earlier this year. The new mum was told to keep her voice down as she was bellowing in support of her husband in a busy Holles Street maternity ward.

Keane actually does a lot of great work for charity. He’s not very charismatic but does some great work behind the scenes.

Unfair to compare the two – One plays rugby / one played soccer. …. Both dedicated to their family and charities

We don’t know what Keane is like personally but when it comes to football Keane he was a thug and a bully. Thiswe do know because there is plenty of evidence of it.. But I think Keane wouldn’t mind this being said about him: this is the culture he was a part of and he was no different from a lot of others who acted in exactly the same way. O’Driscoll on the other hand is the complete opposite. And, as with Keane, there is no shortage of footage that shows this

Hard to know what kind of comment to make here…
People comparing rugby to soccer is kind of like comparing karate to heavyweight boxing. People have different gifts/talents. Some don’t and never will qualify for heavyweight. Both of the guys being spoken about in this thread are absolutely outstanding at what they do. I’m a mechanical engineer and I don’t want to get on the pitch with either of them. No more than they’d want to read an engineering drawing with me.
Can people not just stop bickering about pointless things and respect them for what they’ve achieved?
BTW… I’m not long home from a club in Gothenburg but it seems to me like all the people that were complaining about the “broadcasting charge” and were going to “boycott” RTE, etc.,etc. are the very same ones who were sitting in all night watching Tubridy earlier. Now there’s a lightweight.

It must be nice as a revolutionary looking at multi millionaire premiership twenty something’s kicking a ball around for a 90 minute 0-0 game and then hopping in to their Ferrari’s / Maseratis / Range Rovers . And fat boys ???? What age are you 12 ?

“Huberman, sitting in the Late Late audience, revealed she watched O’Driscoll and Ireland take on England at Croke Park from her hospital bed, hours after giving birth to Sadie earlier this year.” Should that not say the Aviva stadium/ Lansdowne road? These simple mistakes seem to happen very regularly on the Journal!

Ronan …. wasn’t Amy just wonderful to determine it even was a rugby match …. She had just given birth – took a little more exertion and needed more medical assistance than ordering a Big Mac

I never said anything about Amy. Just the fact the journal mis-prints things like this all the time.

Two absolute legends, we will be waiting a long time before any player from either game can be mentioned in the same breath.People seem to forget that Keane was the captain of the then biggest club on the planet, in the worlds most popular sport.

Blah blah blah. BOD is retired. Hasn’t played a rugby for anybody since July 2013 !! Nice work if you can get it. And are we ever going to stop hearing about him being dropped by Gatland for the Lions. He is not the only player to ever have been dropped. Ronan O’Gara was dropped from the Irish team, dumped from the squad and shafted by Declan Kidney. But he doesn’t moan about it at every available opportunity. And he retired with dignity and got on with his life.

Huge BOD fan, but why is he appearing on this nonsense show, surely he has other priorities in his last season as a professional? Does Amy need the publicity or something?
He’s the best rugby centre of all time and Ireland need him at his best, fully focused, and captaining the side.

Keane traveled a much tougher road to get to the top. BOD elected to stay in Ireland instead of going to France or super rugby. Therefore Keane wins on the sporting front, no question. Of course BOD is a nicer man, he stayed in the nice warm bath of Dublin his whole life.

He plays for one of the top clubs in European rugby, I’m sure if cork city were of the status of man utd then keane would have stayed in “the warm bath” of cork, both men played at the top of their game, keane just had to leave to follow the money, so I’d call it a draw actually… Keane does a little bit for charity nowadays fair play but he’s an arrogant angry man who showed no pride for his country and was a shaved headed thug on the pitch

Keane was a legend of a sport played in every single country on the planet. BOD is a legend in a sport played competitively in a handfull of countries. The six nations has to be the most boring sporting competition in the whole world. All the hullaballoo about playing the same frickin 5 teams year in year out and when we manage to beat all 5 (or 4 as it used to be) every hundred years or so it’s made out to be the greatest sporting achievement we will ever witness in our lifetimes…give me a break.

Can I ask a question? Where did the Keane and BOD comparison come from? Why not compare BOD and Dennis Irwin’s character or is it just easier have a dig at Keane? Irwin was and still is, a gentleman, on and off the pitch. Suppose it’s easier sling mud at Keane. I adore the two of them and what they”ve contributed to their sports but anybody comparing them is a fecking eejit.

Oh and you know why you might have compared them? They’re both the best this country has produced at what they do. End of. Soccer and Rugby arguments on here are, and always will be, utter tripe.

“including his controversial axing” I think you should withdraw this statement as it uses prejudicial terminology.

    1) “Axing” is a pejorative term in this sense. The teams fielded during the last Lions tour included changes in every game due to injury, merit or tactical choice by the Management. Therefore saying O Driscoll was “axed” while at the same time not mentioning that the same team did not play consecutively without changes is misleading. Or implies that O Driscoll deserves preferential treatment.

    2) Given the above fact that no two teams fielded by the Lions in any games had the exact same composition how is the removal of O Driscoll “Controversial”. If the Lions management had selected the exact same team for every tour game up until the final test and then dropped O Driscoll you could perhaps infer that the decision was “controversial”. However with so many changes to the makeup of the team for any individual match how could the exclusion of any player be seen as controversial.

Please correct this in the future as balanced and unbiased Journalism is the trademark of a well functioning free and fair society and with blasé nationalistic statements like this filling up the bandwidth the tone of the internet is lowered.
