Drico doubts about 2015 World Cup

“I think my World Cup ship has sailed,” says Ireland captain Brian O’Driscoll as he reflected on an “okay draw” for the 2015 tournament in England.

IT WAS AN “OKAY draw” in the words of Brian O’Driscoll, mulling over a fate which will see Ireland face France and Italy in a mini Six Nations pool at the 2015 Rugby World Cup.

With a probable quarter-final against New Zealand awaiting the Pool D runners-up, and in light of Ireland’s recent record against France, O’Driscoll’s circumspection was understandable.

If Ireland are to defy a record which has seen them win just one of 13 Tests against Les Bleus since 2003, a sequence which includes defeats at both the 2003 and 2007 World Cups, their captain and leader seemed quite sure that they will have to do it without him.

“It could have been worse,” said O’Driscoll. “It’s a bit of a double-edged sword because when you avoid New Zealand, South Africa or Australia, inevitably when you get to the knockout stages you’re likely to face one of them sooner rather than later.

It’s an okay draw but I’d imagine France and Italy are quietly happy they’ve drawn us. They’ll think they can beat us.

O’Driscoll, who will be a few months shy of his 37th birthday when the World Cup gets underway in September 2015, burst onto the international scene with a famous Parisian hat-trick in 2000, giving Ireland their first win in the French capital since 1972.

It was a stand-out moment in an outstanding career, and while he may yet add more happy memories against France before hanging up his boots, it’s unlikely that they’ll come at what would be his fifth World Cup.

“Early in my career we managed to get a few victories against France and then all of a sudden they became a very difficult team for us to beat.

They play with a lot of confidence against us because of that record.

But if we play well we can definitely beat them.

He added: “I’ll be there in some capacity, but as a player I doubt that very much. It’s far too far away to be contemplating playing.

“I think my World Cup ship has sailed, but I’ll be there as Ireland’s number one supporter.”

  • It has been a real privilege to have been able to watch Brian O Driscoll throughout his career. Definitely the most complete rugby player I have seen in a green jersey and someone who doesn’t know what fear is. In the same way my father’s generation talk about Jack Kyle mine will talk about Brian O Driscoll.

  • This talk of ‘if we win the group we’ll avoid X,Y or Z’ is crap. If you want to win a Rugby World Cup you’re going to have to beat the best the Southern Hemisphere has to offer. It doesn’t matter when you meet them, the objective stays the same.

We beat Australia in the last World Cup so there’s no reason we can’t beat Nrw Zealand in the next one.

  • As a Munster man, I echo Denis’s sentiments. A true legend. It’s actually a really sad day for this nation when we contemplate heading to a world cup without Brian.

Can’t believe there are people calling on him to hang up his boots. We have some very good young players coming through. Who else better to drive them on than BOD. Hopefully come the next world cup he is still around even as an impact sub.

  • In BOD we trust!
Can’t imagine him not on the pitch at RWC 2015! He definitely has another 6 Nations left in him.
I presume he’d be involved with the coaching team at RWC ’15?

  • Seriously ! Brian O Driscoll is one player that comes along every 40 or 50 years, He is going to be some gap to fill when he eventually hangs up his boots,to say his not one of rugby a greats just demonstrates how little rugby a person watches, his is amazing simply

    • @ Mark o Brien. I read the journal everyday and just because I don’t need to feel I must post my opinion on every topic I’m a troll!! Get a life! I have an opinion if you don’t like it tough I don’t need to justify sharing that with you or anybody else.

    • You really sound like a woman scorned or something! Bod is quite simply the most naturally talented rugby player this country has seen or probably will ever see.

    • @Siobhan. Your initial post suggested that BOD is an overrated player with an hyperactive pr machine. While I agree that you have a right to express your opinion, you are still wrong!

    • Hi Siobhan. Im sorry if i offended you. You along with everybody else in the world are quite entitled to have and express their opinion but when you state something which is such utter rubbish as you did above it’s going to make you come across as a troll. And i think i would be right in saying that the vast majority of people thought you were a troll with your comment. Oh by the way i am very happy with the life i have so i dont need to get another one i wouldnt have the energy for both!!

    • That’s quite all right Mark apology accepted it didn’t really bother me that you called me a troll have been called worse, but it obviously bothered you when you made the effort to apologise! :)

  • I don’t agree about all this drico legend stuff. His pr company did more for him than he did on the pitch! It’s about time some fresh faces stepped in and carried Ireland forward instead of relying on old cronies!!

    Reply
    • Wow you must really have some agenda against him cause he is a legend even if it’s based on that one game in paris back at the start of his career, to say its a pr machine really shows you know very little about the sport

      Reply
    • He’s not an old cronie lol he’s a living legend of irish rugby! Probably best there ever was! Would I still play him in the 2013 six nations?? Yes!!

    • What an idiotic comment. Forgetting the flashy passes and tries, O’Driscoll has put his body on the line time and time again in big matches. Anyone who has watched him play and thinks he is not worthy of praise obviously knows nothing about the game!

    • Siobhan please stick to something you have an dot of knowledge about. This country has produced some sporting greats and Brian O’Driscoll is up with the very best of them. nOn and off the pitch he has been a perfect role model to anyone on how to play sport and live your live. nA perfect example of a true Irishman someone we should all be proud of and it’s with great sadness we go to the next world cup without him on te pitch

    • That is simply the most uneducated statement on a player of BOD’s calibre I’ve ever read. Siobhan, talk about something you know about. Your obvious lack of knowledge and trolling is an embarrassment. I’ve played rugby a long time, to a reasonable level. And BOD is undoubtedly the best Irish player ever, a one in a lifetime player to be revered and admired for the way he leads on the pitch and conducts himself off it. No drama, just hard work and commitment. You must have no concept of what it takes to be a top level athlete. Or the battering a body will take along the way. Now off you go and look at a poster of Joey Barton.
