Brian Kerr set to quit as Faroes boss

The Dubliner is to call time on his stint as coach of the Faroe Islands after two-and-a-half years in charge.

FORMER REPUBLIC OF IRELAND boss Brian Kerr is set to step down as coach of the Faroe Islands international side.

In a short statement released this evening, the Faroe Islands Football Association (FSF) simply said that it “was not possible to agree a new contract” with the 58-year-old, whose current deal is set to expire next month.

The Dubliner took charge of the Faroes in April 2009 and quickly guided them to their first competitive win in over eight years, a 2-1 win at home to Lithuania that September.

And although the islanders finished bottom of their qualification groups for both the 2010 World Cup and for Euro 2012, Kerr added a further competitive victory to the sparse national CV with a 2-0 win against Estonia last June.

It’s not yet known what Kerr’s next move will be, although his name has been touted in connection with the vacant Northern Irish post in recent weeks.

His parents, Margaret and Frank, were both originally from Belfast, and in a recent interview with Newstalk 106-108, he hinted that he would like to continue on in international management.

“I like international football, I have been in it for most of the last 16 years so I know international football,” Kerr said.

But for as long as he was under contract with the Faroes, he conceded that he was not likely to be on the Irish Football Association’s (IFA) radar.

They have plenty of candidates and at the moment I’m not one of them.
