Brian Cody: 'The personal stories of the people involved are absolutely inspiring'

A unique match in aid of cancer charities took place last Monday in Portlaoise.

SEVERAL GAA STARS took part in last Monday’s charity Gaelic football game at O’Moore Park in Portlaoise in aid of the cancer units at St Luke’s and St James’ hospitals.

The players have all battled and overcome cancer during their lives with Cork All-Ireland winner Joe Deane, Fermanagh’s Allstar Marty McGrath, Wicklow footballer John McGrath and ex-Louth player Derek Shevlin amongst those involved.

Here they tell their stories and are saluted by Brian Cody and Mick O’Dwyer – who managed the two teams on the day – and legendary commentator Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh.

Brian Cody sums up the character of the people involved here.

“They’re wonderfully inspirational stories about people who got a serious setback but had the dream to get back living their lives again.”
