Brendan Rodgers favourite to be named Liverpool manager on Friday

The Swansea coach has a clause in his contract that states he can talk to a big club if he ‘felt it was right for us to move on’.

THE SEARCH FOR Liverpool’s new manager could well be over by Friday afternoon after reports placed Swansea coach Brendan Rodgers in prime position to move to Anfield.

It has been reported this morning that Fenway Sports Group, Liverpool’s American owners, will announce the club’s new manager on Friday and only two men remain in contention for the role.

Wigan manager Roberto Martinez has met with FSG already but Rodgers refused an earlier approach to interview for the job.

Swansea stated, on 18 May, “The club is pleased to confirm that Brendan has declined the current opportunity to speak to the Anfield club about the vacant position.”

Developments

Rodgers met with his employers at Swansea on Tuesday but the club pointed out that the get-together was about internal matters.

Since that meeting, however, the 39-year-old has clarified his position with regards to leaving the Welsh club.

He said, “I didn’t put any clause in my contract to say if a top-four club comes in then I can speak to them. Not at all.” He added:

The only item that was in the contract was if a big club came in and wanted me, and the chairman and I felt it was right for us to move on, then I wanted the club to benefit from it. That was very important for me that if I left the club would get rewarded.

“Other than that, I didn’t want to instigate anything in the contract because I wanted to show I was happy here and continue to work.”

God blocks transfer

Meanwhile, Wigan midfielder Mohamed Diame has revealed that he was all set to sign for Liverpool this summer before Kenny Dalglish was sacked.

He said, “I met Kenny Dalglish and we talked about next season but God decided to finish this situation. It is true.

I was very sad in my head as I was thinking to go there but that is okay as I think I have got other opportunities to go to another club.

“I have got some offers from Spain, from France, from Turkey, but I really want to stay in the Premier League.”
