Awards time for Tipperary's Brendan Cummins and World Champion Rob Heffernan

Sligo Rovers, Davy Fitzgerald and the Irish Ladies rugby team are all nominated for the Canon Hayes Sports Awards tomorrow night.

TIPPERARY’S LEGENDARY HURLING goalkeeper Brendan Cummins is to be honoured in his own county tomorrow night after a year where he brought the curtain down on a brilliant career.

Cummins retired in October after an inter-county career where he won two All-Ireland medals, five Allstars, five Munster medals and three National League medals.

He also holds the record for the highest number of appearances in the history of the championship.

Cummins is to receive the Mick Doyle Golden Memory Award tomorrow night at the Canon Hayes National Sports Awards. The event takes place at a banquet at Ballykisteen Hotel and Golf Resort.

Other big names that are being féted include World Champion Rob Heffernan who will receive the Outstanding Achievement Award. Heffernan claimed the Gold Medal in the 50k walk at the World Championships in Moscow in August.

In the running for the National Award are Sligo Rovers after they lifted the FAI Ford Cup for third time in four years in November. Davy Fitzgerald is also nominated after his success in steering the Clare hurlers to All-Ireland senior hurling glory. Finally the Irish Ladies Rugby Team are nominated after winning the Grand Slam and the Six Nations championship.

County Award: Seán Tobin, Loughmore-Castleiney GAA, Greg Broderick.

Canon Hayes/Volunteer In Sport Award: Anne Bourke (Co Tipperary Lawn Tennis Club), Garreth Byrne (Brian Borús Ladies Football Club), Liam Fennell (South Tipp Titans, Basketball Club), Michael Flynn (St Michael’s AFC), Tom O’Ceallaigh (Clonmel Commercials GFC), John Quinlan (New Inn Camogie Club).
