Arrivederci Fabio: Capello steps down from England post

England are on the lookout for a new manager after the Italian announced his decision to resign this evening.

ENGLAND MANAGER FABIO Capello has resigned from his post with immediate effect.

The English FA confirmed the news in a press release this evening following a meeting at Wembley Stadium.

The decision comes hot on the heels of Capello’s criticism of the footballing body after they removed the international captaincy from John Terry this week.

The 65-year-old told Italian television station Rai that he wished for the Chelsea defender to remain in the position and by doing so, was seen tobreach FA protocol and challenge their authority.

It is believed that he was unwilling to back down from his stance during discussions with FA Chairman David Bernstein and FA General Secretary Alex Horne earlier today, which infuriated the pair, and ended the meeting by handing in his notice.

David Bernstein said in a statement this evening: “I would like to stress that during today’s meeting and throughout his time as England Manager, Fabio has conducted himself in an extremely professional manner. We have accepted Fabio’s resignation, agreeing this is the right decision.

We would like to thank Fabio for his work with the England team and wish him every success in the future.”

Bernstein and the England management team are set to hold a press conference tomorrow afternoon, where they are likely to explain what their next move will be.

Coincidently, the man favourite to be installed in the job next, Harry Redknapp, was today cleared of any wrongdoing at his tax evasion trial.

The Spurs boss is right in the middle of a race for a top four finish in the Premier League but could now take over at England sooner than expected and lead them to Euro 2012.
