More pressure on Roddy as Bray let Derry off the hook

Honours even at the Carlisle Grounds after Bray miss a first-half penalty.

Bray Wanderers 0-0 Derry City

BRAY WANDERERS’ NEAR six-year wait for a win over Derry City goes on after a 0-0 draw at a sunsoaked Carlisle Grounds

In a game dominated by the Seagulls, their best chance fell to the outstanding Graham Kelly.

Ismahil Akinade collected the ball out on the left before attempting to swing a cross goalwards. That was adjudged to have have been handled by Danny Ventre and Welsh official Iwan Griffith pointed to the spot.

Kelly stepped up, eyed up Doherty, and subsequently decided to go for power. That was a misguided decision as the effort was blasted against the bar and David Cassidy smashed over the follow-up.

The second period brought a little bit more in terms of attacking threat from the Candystripes and a free kick from Enda Curran tested Stephen McGuinness.

Still though it was Bray that pressed. Kelly was again at the heart of things as Doherty completed his victory in their personal duel, batting away the former Athlone Town midfielder’s effort.

Late on, Derry may even have snatched an undeserved winner. Some fine work from Michael Duffy brought the chance and he unleashed a thundering effort which McGuinness did well to keep out.

The final whistle brought chants of “We want Collins out” from sections of the Derry faithful as the Dubliner’s shaky start to life up north continues.
