Bohs suffer embarrassing European exit, Pat's through on away goals

Aaron Callaghan’s side were beaten comprehensively by European minnows Thor Akureyri.

A POOR DISPLAY from Bohemians resulted in a 5-1 aggregate loss against Icelandic minnows Thor Akureyri, as the Irish side exited the Europa League in the process.

Having drawn the first leg 0-0, they would have fancied their chances going into game, against a side that are 4th in the Icelandic second division.

Bohs opened the scoring through Dave Scully amid an encouraging opening half hour for the Irish side.

However, it was all downhill from there. A mistake from Owen Heary allowed Sigurdur Kristjansson to equalise, before Orri Hjaltalin gave the hosts the lead from a corner going into half-time.

An unfortunate own goal from Kevin Feely just after half-time gave Bohs’ opponents a two goal-advantage, giving the Irish side a mountain to climb thereafter.

And with the tie all but over, Kristjansson scored two more goals in the dying stages, completing his hat-trick and ensuring the visitors’ European dream ended in ignominy.

Meanwhile, in the evening’s other tie, St Patrick’s Athletic lost 2-1 on the night after extra-time, but ultimately went through on away goals, having won the first leg 1-0.

A Stephen O’Flynn effort in extra time against IBV was ultimately enough to send them through to the next round.

Matt Garner’s goal for the hosts brought the game into extra time, and an Eythor Birgisson strike doubled his side’s advantage, before O’Flynn’s scored Bohs’ decisive away goal.
