Bohemians apologise to Zayed over racist abuse

The Airtricity League club have demanded that the fans involved come forward and accept the appropriate punishment.

BOHEMIANS HAVE RELEASED a statement condemning the treatment of Shamrock Rovers striker Eamon Zayed.

The Hoops player, a former Ireland U21 international who now represents Libya, was subjected to racist abuse from a small section of the home fans during Friday night’s Airtricity League game at Dalymount Park.

Bohs, who recorded an impressive 1-0 win over their Dublin rivals, have branded the behaviour “unacceptable” and called for those involved to come forward.

“Bohemian FC condemns unequivocally the racist abuse directed at Shamrock Rovers player Eamon Zayed after last Friday’s match in Dalymount Park,” the statement reads.

The club apologises to Eamon Zayed and to Shamrock Rovers for this completely unacceptable incident.

“If the culprit or culprits are identified, Bohemian FC will take sanctions against them, including barring them from Dalymount Park.

Club president Matt Devaney added: “The best thing they can do to support the club is to come forward, apologise and take the punishment.”

“Both sets of fans bring shame to Irish sport”

Yeah, the 3,000 or so in attendance should be absolutely ashamed of themselves, watching their teams play a football match. The shame of it all. Well done on a completely pointless comment that totally missed the point of what I was saying.

Just to get a bit of balance on this -

As the players from both sides were leaving the ground last Friday night, a few dozen Bohs fans were out between the bar and the main stand drinking to another victory over the sorry hoops. One person, stupidly, shouted to Zayed that he was a “shoe-bomber” before being told to pipe down by those around him. Obviously, this is completely unacceptable and the person in question should face the consequences of these actions.

But just a couple of other points -

Eamonn Zayed, after revelaing this abuse on Twitter after the match, was then quoted in The Star yesterday saying that around 50 (yes, FIFTY) Bohs fans racially abused him. Now it’s not very difficult to tell the difference between an indivudual shouting abuse and a group of 50 lads shouting abuse.

Some Shamrock Rovers fans admitted that numerous individuals in their end of the ground shouted similar racial slurs at Zayed as he warmed up and subsequently came on later in the game. Zayed chose to only focus on the one person in the home end however and ignore the abuse from his own lot, and blow it out of all proportion.

So, what happened after game is unacceptable, but Zayed’s reaction has been despicable.

Not all fans. Let’s not stereotype on an article of this nature for God’s sake! If you really wanted to make a difference why not get your well bred, liberal arse down to a league of Ireland game and show them how real supporting should be done? Until then I don’t believe you should consider trying to assume some sort of moral hight ground.
