IRELAND HAVE DELAYED their team announcement for Saturday’s clash with Italy by 48 hours as they struggle with an injury crisis that threatens to rob Brian O’Driscoll of a potential Six Nations farewell.

O’Driscoll suffered concussion, a lacerated ear and a dead leg in the 13-13 draw with France over the weekend and the veteran is facing a race against time to appear in what could be his last Six Nations match.

O’Driscoll’s current contract with the Irish Rugby Union expires later this year and he has hinted he may opt to retire soon.VIreland, who had been due to reveal their starting line-up on Tuesday, will now name their team for the Stadio Olimpico clash on Thursday.

“I asked Brian why he wanted to tackle Vincent Debaty twice — I thought he had more smarts than that,” assistant coach Les Kiss said. “He’s a warrior who puts his body on the line week in, week out. We know that. It’s amazing what he pulls from his reserves.

“I imagine he’ll do everything to be available for Italy. He’s talking as though he’ll be there”

O’Driscoll’s centre partner Luke Marshall was also concussed against France, while wing Fergus McFadden has been ruled out for between three to six weeks with a fractured rib. The loss of McFadden has been offset by the return of Craig Gilroy from a groin strain, while scrum-half Conor Murray has made a swift improvement from his knee problem.

Lock Donnacha Ryan absorbed another bang to his shoulder and will only take part in modified training, while substitute scrum-half Eoin Reddan is set for surgery on his fractured fibula and ankle ligament damage.

  • Do the media want BOD to retire I’m still waiting to hear any reliable source confirm it’s even being thought of.

The journal should change its name to the spoon for all the pot stirring it does!!

  • Yes, he looked absolutely drained, hardly able to respond to Amy. He’s a true hero. One part of me wants to see him continue and another says maybe he’s given as much as he can and needs to give the old bod (sorry!) a rest. He should definitely have a presence in the Irish team. We need his leadership skills and steadying influence.

  • There was definitely a curse on our Six Nations…. has a team ever seen so many injuries in each game?!

    • What was kidney saying,45% injury rate when normal is 10-15%? Why bother with the player welfare scheme, it doesn’t seem to be helping.

    • Because imagine the amount of injuries or players who would be unavailable if we didn’t? The IRFU deserves credit for this system, we are a tiny country who have consistently punched above our weight, we need this system to look after our small player pool

    • Logically you are spot on and i do applaud the IRFU for instigating it. Who’s to say its helping us and not hindering us though? Its not done by any of the other 6n teams and yet they seem to consistently survive with a lower injury count then we do?

    • Good coaches do player wellfare without the IRFU, look at Leinster ( its what I know best) there’s a serious rotation system and everyone given a chance to play and a chance to rest. even the non Irish squad players get rotated. Every coach wants his best 15 the be reasonably fresh come the end of season and he also wants to know who is form players are and can only do that by giving them a game.

    • Yup. Ok, since were talking about what we know. Munster. BJ has played far, far more mins then the Irish internationals and has not, AFAIK, been unavailable for selection at any stage this season. He’s a prop. If Munster can manage him like that I then u have to wonder…. Coughlan the same, always picked and has only been injured (seriously) once this season and that was caused by an act of thuggery from a Scottish prop.

  • The sight of O’Driscoll leaving the pitch on saturday was like that of a soldier leaving the battlefield, having nothing more to give, having fought valiantly and selflessly for his country..the line from Michael Collins, the movie,is kind of apt..’when im gone, who will take my place?’…inspirational.

  • Brian did say last month that this may be his last Six Nations though later said he didn’t mean to suggest he was going to retire! Hate to see him go … but he’s a dad now and needs to look after himself.

  • Cian, you have a point….to a point. We seem to be defending alot more this season compared to others. More tackles etc. It’s taking its toll. I reckon some of the new players coming in are literally putting their bodies on the line now that they’ve been given a chance. Our players espc our forwards look a bit too lean in a game where bulked up heavyweights dominate.

    • I think your spot on. We’ve been defending too much in this years 6n. Too many bone crunching tackles. If we were spending more time in attack we may be shipping less injuries. Mind u Reddan was fresh and attacking. Maybe were just going through a bad spell but you have to wonder….

  • I think one of the reasons why we seem to be defending more this season is that we’re letting the opposition back into the game and not forcing our tactics on them for the full 80 minutes. We’ve been sitting back for portions of the game which invites the opposition back in, meaning there’s a lot more defending to be done. Against big physical teams like England and France that will take (and has taken) it’s toll

  • For goodness sake Brian , don’t leave us! Would someone in the IRFU talk sense into him? He’s still a superb player. Why not keep going like Ryan Giggs …ok rugby is more bruising etc, but you get my point. And one more request, please put Ronan O Gara back on the bench. He’s too good to be demoting. If he had started the English game it’s arguable that he would have scored those penalties. Then substitute later etc to bring on the new guy. Use more players, show more imagination D. Kidney!

Frankly I’m really more looking forward to seeing the Irish Women play for the Grand Slam. And let’s hope they get full proper coverage like the U21′s for godsakes!
