BLACKROCK COLLEGE ARE celebrating a double success, after beating Belvedere 14-10 in today’s Leinster Schools Junior Cup final, having already won the Senior Cup earlier this month.

In a closely-fought encounter, scrum-half Patrick Patterson finished off a well-worked move to put Blackrock in the lead, with outhalf Peter O’Reilly converting.

Both sides failed to take advantage of some good opportunities thereafter, before Dylan Corrigan Forbes put Belvedere on the scoreboard with a well-struck penalty on the brink of half-time.

Five minutes after the break, a fine individual run from substitute Tom Roche resulted in Blackrock’s second try of the game, with O’Reilly once again making no mistake with the conversion to make it 14-3.

In desperate need of a score, Belvedere piled on the pressure late on, and were finally rewarded when David Hawkshaw evaded his marker and crossed over under the posts, before David Lacey kicked the conversion.

Nevertheless, it was too little too late despite a brave Belvedere showing, with Blackrock capping off a phenomenally successful year by claiming another Junior Cup triumph — the 48th time they have won competition in total.
