DUBLIN CITY CENTRE revellers take note: Dublin Bus have confirmed that they will not be running their Nitelink services tonight. They took the decision “in view of the forecast tonight for severe frost and ice developing combined with current road conditions”.

Many routes are currently curtailed – click here to see which ones – while the coach service that has been substituting for the Luas trams between Sandyford and Brides Glen will stop at 10pm. The Luas Connolly stop is still out of service but the Red line is otherwise running fully between Tallaght and the Point.

ALL LUAS SERVICES have been suspended on both the Red and Green lines for the rest of the evening. The Luas Customer Care officials are saying that the complete stoppage is due to snow levels on the tracks. They are hoping to have the trams running again from 5.30am tomorrow but advise checking their website home page and transport.ie.

Dublin Bus says that its last buses will leave the city centre and suburbs tonight at 9pm. In better news, flights are again arriving and departing Dublin Airport but the DAA is advising that passengers check their airline’s website before coming to the airport this evening because the flight schedule has been severely disrupted.

Website whiteout for transport information

As Dublin Airport and buses suspend services, several public transport and travel information sites crash.

REPORTS are emerging that buses have stopped running in Dublin city. Twitter users and callers to Liveline on RTE Radio One began ringing and tweeting information in the past half-hour that buses had pulled in to the side of extremely icy roads and passenger had to get off. Calls made by TheJournal.ie to Dublin Bus and Bus Eireann spokespeople have not yet been returned and the Dublin Bus website is currently returning a blank white page with the message “This service is unavailable”.

NOT ONLY WILL the current cold snap continue for the coming days, but it has now emerged that despite the warnings from the January snowstorms, Ireland is running out of salt. Officials from the Department of the Environment said this lunchtime that the volume of salt being used to treat roads in the current conditions was twice the anticipated amount, and that remaining supplies would have to be preserved. Brian Cowen earlier told the Dáil, however, that stocks remained sufficient.
