'Better late than never but it might be a PR stunt' - Dunphy

The RTÉ pundit has given his two cents’ worth on today’s squad announcement.

RTÉ PUNDIT EAMON Dunphy says he is pleased to see the new faces in Ireland’s squad and believes it should have happened earlier.

In Anthony Pilkington, Richard Keogh, Jeff Hendrick and Conor Sammon, Giovanni Trapattoni has brought in four players for the first time ahead of next month’s friendly with Poland as a number of established members are either injured or rested.

Dunphy is often critical of the Italian’s team selections and rigid style of play but has backed the decision to freshen up the team.

Speaking on RTE Radio 1′s Sport at 7, Dunphy said: “He (Trapattoni) has come to the idea late but better late than never. It’s interesting that he picked the squad he picked.

Pilkington should have been in the squad a long time ago. He’s very versatile, he can play left and right and is very strong. He’s the most exciting in a way. Wes Hoolahan too if he can get a game.

“This is a change of heart but it may be a PR stunt. It should have been done all along. When (James) McClean and (James) McCarthy and the likes were younger they should have been spotted earlier.”
