Time to make* some money – here are our 5 favourite bets for the 2012 Ryder Cup

  • Outright handicap: USA -1.5 points (evens)

    Forget about all the pro-European bluster for a moment: this is a very good American team, playing on home soil. They are favourites and rightly so. Looking at the form and looking at the individual matchups, it seems possible that the Americans might just be a bit too strong. If you fancy them, -1.5 is a tempting handicap.

  • Top European points scorer: Justin Rose (7/1)

    Justin Rose heads to Medinah in a nice bit form with three top-five finishes in his last six tournaments, including his second to Brandt Snedeker at the Tour Championship last weekend. He's only played at one Ryder Cup, in 2008, but his record there was good with three wins from four games. To have any chance of being Europe's top points scorer, he'll need to play a lot and it looks like he'll team up with old friend Ian Poulter on Friday morning. If they win, it could be start of a hot weekend for J-Rose.

  • Top rookie points scorer: Brandt Snedeker (3/1)

    He's riding high following his big money win at the Tour Championship last weekend, but 2012 has been a good year in general from Brandt Snedeker. Now ranked 10th in the world, Sneds has had two Tour wins and two other top-three finishes this season as well as a couple of top-10s. If he can carry that form into this weekend, it's hard to see any of the other rookies -- Jason Dufner, Keegan Bradley, Webb Simpson and Nicolas Colsaerts -- matching him.

  • Total number of halved matches: over 4.5 (8/11)

    The stats don't lie. The total number of halved matches in the last seven Ryder Cups (in reverse order): 5, 7, 7, 3, 6, 5, 5. For all of you contrarians, the unders is priced up at evens.

  • To hole the winning putt: Graeme McDowell (18/1)

    Twice in the last 10 years, Europe's winning putt has been holed by an Irish golfer: Paul McGinley in 2002 and Graeme McDowell in 2010. Betting on the winning putt is a bit of a lottery as it all comes down to the order of the singles matches on Sunday. G-Mac's cool head under pressure at Celtic Manor two years ago could see him placed at the tail end of Olly's teamsheet and if that happens, 18/1 on lightning striking twice isn't bad value.
