5 previous meetings between Bayern Munich and Manchester United

Just to get you in the mood for tomorrow’s game.

5. April 2001 – Bayern Munich 2-1 Man Utd

2001 (April 18) Bayern Munich (Germany) 2… by sp1873

AFTER LOSING THE first leg of their quarter-final at home, United knew they needed to manufacture a win in Munich to go through but the tie was virtually over inside five minutes when Elber opened the scoring and after Mehmet Scholl made it two, United’s campaign was done.

Despite Wayne Rooney scoring just a minute into the game, United looked like they were going to ship five or more goals but for the heroics of Edwin van der Sar.

However, the Dutchman was eventually beaten after United gave away a needless free-kick and Ivica Olic — and he’ll feature again — put Bayern into the driving seat in the quarter-final tie.

3. September 1998 – Bayern Munich 2-2 Man Utd

This was a group stage game that featured one of the worst offside decisions ever made when Gio Elber’s goal was allowed to stand despite being more offside than should be humanly possible.

United fought back with goals from Dwight Yorke and Paul Scholes and it looked like they’d take all three points until Peter Schmeichel did his best David James impression and gifted Munich an 89th minute equaliser.

This seemed like it was going to be one of those famous Old Trafford nights when United, trailing 2-1 from the first leg as you saw above, raced into a 3-0 lead in 40 minutes thanks to Darren Gibson and two Nani strikes.

Sadly for United, Olic poached a goal just before the break and when Rafael was sent off, Bayern asserted their numerical advantage before Arjen Robben’s stunning goal sealed an away goals win for the Germans.
