BAYERN MUNICH GRABBED a strong hold of their UEFA Champions League semi-final with Barcelona thanks a 4-0 first-leg victory at the Allianz Arena.
The German side took the lead as Thomas Muller pounced upon some ponderous Barca defending to nod home, while Mario Gomez and Arjen Robben’s solo effort put the gloss on the result before Muller’s second made it a rout.
Lionel Messi was declared fit for the game and named in the Barcelona starting line-up alongside 22-year-old defender Marc Bartra. For the hosts, Jupp Heynckes opted to field Gomez in place of the suspended Mario Mandzukic.
Bayern started the game well and tested Victor Valdes in the opening five minutes with an incisive passing move down the right-hand side. Gomez was found inside the penalty area and played a superb back-heel to Robben but the Dutchman could only shoot straight at the goalkeeper.
In the 16th minute, the newly-crowned German champions saw appeals for a penalty turned down by referee Viktor Kassai. Bayern captain Philipp Lahm broke down the right and fired an effort from the edge of the penalty area that appeared to strike Gerard Pique on the arm, but the Germans’ protests were waved away.
Nine minutes later, the home side’s pressure paid off as they took advantage of some questionable Barcelona defending to open the scoring. A right-wing cross from Robben found Dante at the back post, he rose above Dani Alves and headed the ball across goal to the unmarked Muller who placed his header past Valdes.
The hosts doubled their lead four minutes after the break as Muller returned the favour to Gomez, however, they had a huge slice of luck as the striker was clearly in an offside position as he scored. A Robben corner from the right was won by Muller at the back post; he rose above Alves and placed his header back across goal where Gomez tapped home from inches out.
Eventually, Barca wrestled control of the game back from their hosts, however, despite dominating possession, Manuel Neuer barely had a save to make. The closest the visitors came was in the 69th minute when a loose ball dropped at the feet of Bartra inside the box but the youngster failed to get any power in his shot and Neuer collected easily.
And they were made to pay for their poor finishing in the 73rd minute as Robben added a glorious third goal to give the hosts a commanding lead in the tie. The Dutchman tricked his way past Jordi Alba on the right-hand side before calmly slotting the ball beyond Valdes from a tight angle.
The Germans took absolute control of the tie with eight minutes to play as Muller grabbed his second of the game after more sloppy defending from the visitors. Bastian Schweinsteiger broke from the half-way line before feeding Franck Ribery on the left, he played a neat pass into David Alaba who crossed for Muller to tap home from close range.
and he can’t even get in Red Fury first 11, what with Xabi Alonso, Busquets, Iniesta, Xavi, Fabregas, Villa, Javi Garcia, Silva, Cazorla.. ridiculous amount of talent!!
No chance will Suarez go to Bayern. They’re a perfectly run club full of true professionals, controversy free. Do you seriously think they’ll take a chance on a lad with Suarez’s history?
If you look at the players in the first-teams of Man United, Man City, Chelsea and even Tottenham, there are very few from United who would get into the latter three teams, but a lot who are of far better quality who could easily go the other way, if it wasn’t for Ferguson and RVP, United would be in a shocking way with the likes of Ferdinand, da Silva, Kagawa, Valencia and Carrick (one swallow doesn’t make a summer) even Rooney who has been poor for a while now, the fact they won the league at a canter does highlight how poor the Premiership has become
If Man City, Chelsea & Spurs have, respectively, so many great players that would walk onto Manchester United’s one man team; why is it that none of those three talent packed teams are champions?
Tbh you can hardly say these players are poor, kagawa needs another season before being judged, not that he did anything particularly bad, da silva was probably the best right back in the league this season bar zabelata, an unbelievable improvement from last year, and if Gareth Barry can start day in day out for city, carrick would walk onto that team… And for the likes of rio and Rooney, one is thirty four years of age, the other spent half his time sidelined with injury this season, and they’d start for every other team in the league, and people harper on about the league being of lesser quality, it was going to happen at some stage, the Germans rule the roost now but soon English teams will display there dominance…. People calling united a poor team, the league may be diminished but they are the first team to win 25 of 30 games… They deserved it hands down, and Mancini’s cry of they are not better then us is just a ridiculous plea for everyone to feel sorry for him… The table NEVER lies…… And as for one man teams, united have had 19 different scorers this season… A record…. How many other teams in Europe can acclaim to such a stat… And RvP scored 20 something goals for man u because they paid the bucks for him to do it for another year, if he didnt their money would have been wasted but he did… It’s called good business…..
Gaius, are you serious? Liverpool are seventh for a reason… Only Gerard and Suarez would start for united… Coutinho plays half a season and look at you, courting him already, agger is woeful, as is skrtel, every centre half united have would start for Liverpool, and as for the keeper, de gea has made far less mistakes then reina this year….
United have too many players that take 5-6 seasons to have one good season such as da Silva,Nani,Carrick,Fergie’s still hoping that tub of lard Anderson will come good
Silva is only 21, carrick has 5 perms and a champions league, nani has played well for us many times, but lacks consistency, and as for ando, shown flashes but his fitness is atrocious… And what about the likes of Carroll and Henderson and downing and Lucas, they are all very good players alright.. The fact that you mention Anderson even though he doesn’t start for us to try and prove your point illustrates how pointless your argument is… And he’d start alongside Gerard instead of that weak sap allen, and yeah your right, he’s probably over weight, because you know that’s how England’s most successful clubs likes their midfielders, overweight…. Very funny ;)
Gauis- words fail me. You are a muppet. Coutino? After maybe 4 good games? reina has been sh!t for 2 years now. Liverpool are 33 points behind. And finished 37 behind last year. Stop embarrassing yourself. Champ20ns.
As in he’s better or worse? Well look he’s come on leaps and bounds from the guy who used to dive into everything, and single handedly costing us points and games…..
Hold your horses Hank,I never said Liverpool were better than United,my point is that of the Top 4 first XI’s United’s is the poorest player for player, but Ferguson has made it work, unsurprisingly,I think it’s the worst United team to win the league. As for Coutinho,he’s already starred in the Champions League for Inter and played for Brazil so I’ve no doubt, given his instant impact that he’ll be a huge success, and yes,he would easily get his game for United
Ah Gaius you’re just getting progressively ridiculous with each comment. I can only assume that you’re just trying to wind up United fans. Leo, you’re pissing in the wind with this guy. On that note I bid you all a good night. Champ20ns
You say that Liverpool are not better then Man U, yet only two players from Man U would start for Liverpool… And if me courtinho is as good as you say, why did a declining inter sell him for a reasonably small fee for ‘the next big thing’…
Fergus and Leo,I’m just not getting anywhere with either of you,if you can’t see the pearls of wisdom I’m putting before both your eyes, there’s no hope for either of you
English football is probably at its weakest now for a long time but it had a fine run there for a few years, CL finals in 05, 06, 07, 08, 09, 11 and 12. Just because United lost to Madrid doesnt really mean the death of the league, when such teams play its usually a coin toss who wins, Utd held their own very well in both legs til the sending off, it could have happened to any team.
United know how to win leagues just, thats a quality that can substitute a slightly weakened team, they never panic even at 2-0 down they always believe they can win. When we can deliver a title with a so called bad side it doesnt say much for other teams but it says a lot about Uniteds attitude and spirit. I dont agree with the notion we are a bad team though, I would agree that we are about 2 players short of being a brilliant team again, one good transfer window.
Rio is absolutely useless. He ‘falls’ every time someone skips past him. Its like a ‘you cant blame me for that i fell mechanism’. Rio = past it. Has been for years.
Jason you an abu, or a Liverpool supporter?(well that would make you still an Abu!) love how your calling everyone up when Suarez is mentioned, wouldn’t blame you, the jokes were fun at first but no they’re old, lets just let the fa deal with him and focus on the football….
Well like if the article is on Suarez what else are you going to talk about? I’m just a bit sick of people bringing him into every article on this site is all, should have made that clear i suppose…
Great performance by Bayern, funny seeing all the bitter Man United fans still licking their wounds from all the hidings Barca have given them over the years!
2008 Paul Scholes, Utd 1-0 Barca. Went to the final and won it. When we lost to them in 09 and 11 they were at the height of their power. Any other team in Europe and we’d have won at least one out of the two but it was Barcas time just. One thing about United is we’ll always be back and competing at the highest level, same cant be said for Liverpool who would now regard CL qualification as a good season, theres now five teams in England who are easily better than Liverpool.
A shite league ? Germany have 2 teams in the semi final , ? If thats ur version of a shite league it make the premiership look like the fkn league of ireland
I predict it will be a few years before another premiership team wins the CL… that standard of football played by the Germans and the Spanish is far above anything coming out of England. .
Jesus football is fickle, barca just went from the best club team ever assembled to what people are looking on as a pub team, ze germans were simple incredible tonight, even if ribery does look like the first draft of frankenstein
Ciaran league with most viewers is premier league get facts right German league has most people attending matches in Europe, premier league is way better than German league lets have a vote English league thumbs up German league thumbs down
Every team has a cycle of about 4-5 years and Barca’s is now up, they will still dominate the Spanish league along with Real , but without changes their time in Europe’s No 1 is up.
Shows how much some people know about football when was d last time a German team won d champions league I think there’s being 3 English teams that have won it since the last German team so the English league is shite don’t watch it so
Roy I think that every person that is commenting that the premier league is sh*te is basing it on the last 2 seasons, where the standard has taken a dip, I watch the german league and have to say it has been better then the premier league for at least 2-3 years now. I think this season has proved that.
Barcelona found out? Have never bee a great team at the back, and have relied absolutely on Messi in the last 30 yards. When that doesn’t work, they seem to be going lateral, till they get near the box, at which point they just gave Bayern the ball!
2 dodgy goals, Bayern were good but I would’nt get too carried away. Problem is they dont have enough Germans, what if there’s another penalty shoot-out in the final.
I agree that the English teams are behind the likes of Madrid, Munich, & Barca but that’s about it really.
Utd would certainly be in the next tier of teams behind those 3 along with the likes of Dortmund. They couldn’t have gotten a worse draw in the Last 16, easily drew the best runner-up in that round and Nani’s sending-off ruined any chance of seeing which team would progress as it was shaping up to be a cracking last 30 mins at that point in the match
Man City were poor enough in the group stages, especially away from home but, at the same time, they were in by far the toughest group, one containing both teams playing tonight. City did however draw with both teams in Manchester and really should have beaten Madrid in Madrid but for a blistering last 5 mins from Real.
Arsenal lost 3-1 at home to Bayern in their Last 16 match before going to Munich and asking a few serious questions of the Germans by winning 2-0 and ended up only going out on away goals. This is the same Bayern team who beat Barca 4-0 last night
Chelsea were brutal though
Bit early to be writing off the Premier League just yet, the luck of the draw plays a big part in the knockout stages of all tournaments
Exept for munich, dortmund nd say shalke nd leverkussen de rest of the league is quite below par with the prem counterparts…example a relegation battle between qpr nd readind is a lot more enjoyable to watch as a neutral compared to hoffenheim against poxy fc mainz r sum1

Martin Sheen may not be everyone’s cup of tea as an actor but he has made this Bayern team a force to be reckoned with!
It’s actually a pleasure seeing Barca get hammered!
Barcelona have been getting away with dodgy defending for years. They need to buy a proper central defender like Vincent Kompany…
Or Paul McShane
McShane would be so perfect. He could help Barcelona to get relegated.
A ginger playing in Spain, he would explode from the sunlight.
Unless complimentary factor 350 sun cream is part of the contract.
They’re crying out for a world class keeper too.
Barce have been slowly declining for sometime now. Against a classy and well prepared bayern side a loss isnt a big surprise
I’m delighted Javi Martinez went to Munich instead of City. The player is a beast. Well done Bayern
and he can’t even get in Red Fury first 11, what with Xabi Alonso, Busquets, Iniesta, Xavi, Fabregas, Villa, Javi Garcia, Silva, Cazorla.. ridiculous amount of talent!!
oh and Mata, Arteta.. !!
Scary Jamie. There are some cracking Spanish midfielders who cant get a look in even at the Spanish Squad!
Look at what Pep is inheriting next year, as if Bayern weren’t scary enough already
And Suarez to come. Think he’ll love playing against Utd for Munich.
Suarez thought he was signing up for Munching
No chance will Suarez go to Bayern. They’re a perfectly run club full of true professionals, controversy free. Do you seriously think they’ll take a chance on a lad with Suarez’s history?
It would be something to get his teeth into.
He might take a leg of lamh.
@aidan … What about Ribery???? Every club has one or two but united have about 10
You’re obviously not aware that a major tax evasion scandal broke at the club over the last few days. Not quite as clean as you say!
I wouldn’t say controversy free, Robben and Ribery have had tensions , at Bayern and on the international stage.
Suarez to Bayern. Lol. Not a chance. They have bought Goetze. No way they are taking a chance with that knacker.
Guardiola’s brother may have other ideas, him being Suarez’s agent and all…!?!
was settling in to enjoy the game until i discovered mark lawrenson was commentating – worst commentator ever!
just need barca to score 2 now had 3-2 at 25/1 come on barca!!
Can anyone honestly say Manchester United are anywhere near the standard of these teams.english soccer=sh!te
I love the fact that Lawrenson insists on answering rhetorical questions!
According to lawrenson Muller “came in from the windy city” for the first goal.
I have to agree.standard in England is pretty poor compared to other teams around Europe.
hopefully it will put kids off supporting the utds and liverpools etc and start supporting irish teams.
A classic comment. Where does he get them.
Reina,Agger,Gerrard,Suarez and Coutinho would stroll into United’s team,I’d take a fit Vidic and Van Persie off United but that’d be about it
If Man City, Chelsea & Spurs have, respectively, so many great players that would walk onto Manchester United’s one man team; why is it that none of those three talent packed teams are champions?
Considering they were in cruise control against Madrid who have beaten Barca a few times this season, until Nani was sent off , yes they are
Alex Ferguson
Well as a utd fan id only take Gerrard from yours…..

Garret wake up cruise control my arse
Munich were as hungry as Suarez tonite
Shame Utd aren’t left to be humiliated at Wembley.
Not possible to make a comment on here without referencing united still I see Jason? Bitter? Champions

No harm done
I would love to see Dortmund win it this year.the tam and fans have been outstanding

When was the last time the bin dippers beat them? Stick to watchin the cannibal of anfield on 3e . . 20 times . .he he he
They won’t be in Europe next year just to let you know!
That would be 2007 in the Nou Camp when we beat them on the way to the Champions League Final Bret, when was the last time United beat them?
And we beat them in 2008, on our way to winning it as well….
Gutted. Barcelona are so much better them what we watched tonite.
Possibly true but a lot of the credit for that goes to the diligence of Bayern in defence!
Barca who?
Delighted for Munich, great nite for football it shows u can play in a shite league and still outplay Barcelona cheats
A shite league ? Germany have 2 teams in the semi final , ? If thats ur version of a shite league it make the premiership look like the fkn league of ireland
It’s the most watched league in Europe.
Roy the german league is probably the best league at the moment.
@roy you r a true typical utd fan a credit to the club.
Wow. What a result for Bayern.
Id say its worth sticking a fiver on barca to go through on a 5 0 scoreline. Ha
Nothing would suprise me with them.
I predict it will be a few years before another premiership team wins the CL… that standard of football played by the Germans and the Spanish is far above anything coming out of England. .
Bye Bye Barcelona.
Jesus football is fickle, barca just went from the best club team ever assembled to what people are looking on as a pub team, ze germans were simple incredible tonight, even if ribery does look like the first draft of frankenstein
So what, blackburn beat Millwall ;-)
Couple of dubious goals but Bayern just outclassed them by a mile, Barca barely featured, Messi and the other big faces were missing.
What’s the point of them extra ladder behind the goals…Helen keller would have seen the foul on alba.
Extra lads.
Thanks for clearing that…for a minute I thought I’ve watched different match;)
A ladder probably would of been better then those useless officials
Ciaran league with most viewers is premier league get facts right German league has most people attending matches in Europe, premier league is way better than German league lets have a vote English league thumbs up German league thumbs down
Anyone but the Germans
Whats your problem r u racist
Bayern are lucky they weren’t up against the mite of any english club !!!!!!
Every team has a cycle of about 4-5 years and Barca’s is now up, they will still dominate the Spanish league along with Real , but without changes their time in Europe’s No 1 is up.
I’m surprised at all d Liverpool fans on here tonite usual it’s thurs nites for them and d eufa cup ha ha
More austerity from Merkel on the way for Spain!
Barcelona found out? Have never bee a great team at the back, and have relied absolutely on Messi in the last 30 yards. When that doesn’t work, they seem to be going lateral, till they get near the box, at which point they just gave Bayern the ball!
I reckon Guardiola had a part in this.
Anyone know the odds on barca to qualify?
Ladbrokes 16/1
Juve weren’t so bad after all
Crawley won as well get in there :)
2 dodgy goals, Bayern were good but I would’nt get too carried away. Problem is they dont have enough Germans, what if there’s another penalty shoot-out in the final.
Ouch
Great performance that. Even stronger next year b
The English league is shite and they buy way overrated players or has beings but I’d still rather watch d English league than any other league
