MANCHESTER UNITED STRIKER Dimitar Berbatov could be set for a move back to the Bundesliga with his old club Bayer Leverkusen.
The 30-year-old’s contract with the Premier League champions expires in the summer and Berbatov has been linked with a number of sides due to the limited amount of playing time he has seen this year.
And despite scoring a hat-trick against Wigan in United’s 5-0 win on St Stephen’s Day, the German team believe they might be able to entice the Bulgarian back to the club he spent five seasons with before signing for Tottenham Hotspur back in 2006.
Ivan Dobrinov, a representative of the player, is reported in German newspaper Bild as saying that initial talks have begun on the subject of a possible switch.
“It’s more than a rumour,” Dobrinov said, “Leverkusen have it on their minds to get Berbatov.
“There is contact, but nothing concrete yet. It all depends on United’s plans.
“We wait until January 2. Until then, United have the option but if that does not happen then Berbatov would be a free transfer in the summer.”
“The player has never forgotten Leverkusen, the club is still very dear to him. Furthermore, he has a good relationship with the leadership at Bayer.”
Berbatov has scored 46 Premier League goals since United signed him for €36m back in 2008 but he has fallen behind Wayne Rooney, Javier Hernandez and Danny Welbeck in the pecking order and has only started two league games all season so might reluctantly accept a move despite reiterating his desire to remain with the Red Devils in the past.
