Axed Donegal All Star Kevin Cassidy pleads guilty to affray

Gweedore player was one of four men who appeared in Lettekenny Circuit Court yesterday.

FORMER DONEGAL SENIOR football star Kevin Cassidy yesterday pleaded guilty to causing affray in 2008.

The All Star was one of four men who appeared in Letterkenny Circuit Court to answer charges in relation to an incident in Derrybeg, Co Donegal on 24 August, 2008.

The Gweedore player’s brother, Stephen, of Upper Brinaleck, Gweedore, pleaded guilty to one count of assault using harm, according to local media.

Shaun Maguire of Ardsbeg, Gortahork, admitted using threatening behaviour in a public place while his brother Michael Maguire pleaded guilty to causing an affray with two or more other people, threatening unlawful violence.

The case is adjourned until July.

Kevin Cassidy is no longer part of the county’s senior set up since he was axed from the squad by manager Jim McGuinness.

The 30-year-old was perceived by the coach to have broken the trust of the panel, last autumn, by cooperating with a behind-the-scenes book on last season’s Ulster championship.

He had scored a stunning, last-minute point against Kildare to send Donegal into the All-Ireland semi-finals last summer.

McGuinness this week hinted that there may me an opportunity for a return to the camp for Cassidy in the coming months.
