Award-winning Irish sports writer Kimmage to leave Sunday Times

Barcelona-based football reporter, Ian Hawkey, is also reportedly leaving the paper.

SPORTS WRITERS PAUL Kimmage and Ian Hawkey are set to leave the Sunday Times, according to sportsjournalists.co.uk.

Irish journalist Kimmage, who joined the paper from the Sunday Independent, is understood to be one of the casualties of cost-cutting measures, following the enforced closure of the News of the World during the summer.

The journalist is an ex-Tour de France cyclist, who won SJA’s Sports Interviewer of the Year award five years in a row.

Kimmage also won the Sports Book of the Year prize in 1990 for ‘Rough Ride’, his controversial account of the influence of doping in the sport of cycling.

He has also been nominated for the same prize again this year for ‘Engage,’ his biography of the paralysed ex-England under-21 prop forward Matt Hampson.
