THE MOST INTENSE heatwave in 100 years is melting southern Australia this week, including Melbourne โ the site of 2014 Australian Open.
Temperatures hit 42 degrees Celsius during yesterdayโs action making for unbearable and, at times, unplayable conditions.
With temperatures remaining at least the late 30s until the weekend, it could be the hottest Australian Open ever.
Hereโs why weโre more than happy to still need a coat.
The sun beams down on the Rod Laver Arena
Russiaโs Ekaterina Makarova ices down her face
That wise old sage Roger Federer limbers up in the shade
Kei Nishikori looks in some distress
Italyโs Camila Giorgi turned hot pink
Frank Dancevic of Canada passed all the way out
The ice didnโt stop Jelena Jankovic burning her legs on a chair
Even the locals couldnโt hack it, hereโs Bernard Tomic wringing wet before being forced to retire
Rafa Nadal was dripping with sweat while overcoming Tomicโฆ
โฆso naturally he took his shirt off
A ball boy passed out despite that fetching protective headgear
Serena Williams said the temperatures made her paranoid
The fans who stuck it out had to cover their faces
The wise ones cooled off by the mist machine

Insane, simply dangerous!! These people are athletes not superhuman
Iโm in Melbourne and can confirm it is sunny! Itโs not too pleasant but still not as bad as itโs being made out as thereโs very little humidity. Still glad Iโm not playing a four hour tennis match in it mind you!
Itโs easy saying itโs not that bad when youโre sitting down eating an ice-cream. I walked 2k to the shop in Perth on Saturday when it was 43โ, I was drenched in sweat when I got there! Playing tennis in that heat is dangerous
Sun, glorious sun. Would take it over the miserable wet conditions i had to endure at 7am this morning.
Sick of weather updates from oz.people on Facebook posting how hot it is.i donโt care how hot it is over there!!!!!! Rant over
Youโd rather be in an oven? Are you mad?
To be fair, you are reading an article about the intense heat at the AUSTRALIAN openโฆ. Were you expecting comments about Enda and cronies or what!!!
Whatโฆ.an Irish person who doesnt like talking about the weather?????
Nick why oh why do you have to make this about our government?youโre another type of person that gets on my nerves you always have to twist it back to the government.i was interested in the above article to see how the tennis players are coping with the heat.what I said in the previous comment was people on Facebook commenting about how hot it is.
Hahaha! Iโm sick of reading those political comments on every thread I come across here! If youโre sick of hearing about the weather in oz then why would you read this particular article?
Nick my rant was nothing to do about this article I was interested in the tennis.what I was giving out about was about comments on Facebook.
Itโs 20โ here at the minute buddy, itโll be a toasty 33โ tomorrow with 0% chance of rain
Nick thank you so much for letting me know what temperature it is over there.what will you have for breakfast and lunch tomorrow?what time will you go to the bathroom at?
Would love RAIN!
Love the mist machine, havenโt seen one in years.
Did a mountain bike race in Switzerland last summer and there was a mist machine in the middle of the circuit. Mad random
Nothing compared to what we had in the summer
Thatโs not Rod Laver Arena in Pic 1
The first pic is not rod laverโฆ..itโs Margaret Court โฆโฆ..I think . Funnily enough her name is actually Margaret Court. As opposed to it being Margaretโs courtโฆโฆ
Nah โ Show court 2โฆIโve played there!
Those mist machines are great but you can get little โmicro burnsโ from the droplets magnifying the sunโs rays. This happened to me in Florida even though I was wearing sun screen.
Just because itโs 44c doesnโt mean its sunny.
Most of those pictures are taken in the sun.
Yes Stephen I think itโs safe to say that itโs sunny.
Spot on Stephen my oven can reach temp over 220degrees and it doesnโt have to be sunny out plus the oven lights broke
The first picture look pretty f ucking sunny to me.
this is a typical Melbourne summer, itโs no unusual to get hot spells they tend to come by every 3-4 Summers with four to five consecutive days of 40+ and nights not falling below mid-low 20s, every night for the last three itโs been 30c at midnight, but weโre expecting a break Friday afternoon with the temp expected to drop 15-20c in an hour.
