Australia scored one of the great own goals in International Rules history

Surely this is enough reason to keep the series alive?

AUSTRALIA BEAT IRELAND 56-46 to win the 2014 International Rules Series and lift the Cormac McAnallen Cup in Perth this morning.

Ireland trailed 35-7 at half-time but launched a determined second-half comeback which fell just short.

The visitors’ goals came courtesy of Monaghan’s Darren Hughes and this gem by Australia’s Nick Smith which was as ludicrous as it was glorious.

Very good game. Serious fitness shown from both teams in the final quarter. Now bring on the rugby!

Did you see the first half? Absolute dross, had to improve in the second. Terrible to watch

Realistically it was over at half time. Yes we made it a little bit interesting but even with them banging the ball into their own net we were never really going to win. 17 – 5 to our 9 – 7 in overs vs behinds … … who plays with the round ball?

I’ve been watching these games since their inception and two things have constantly stood out in my mind.
The first is the obvious advantage it is to hit a man in the chest with the foot pass and yet, year after year, we see Irish players hitting short passes that bounce or run along the ground!
And the second is the Aussie rule that allows a player stand at the spot where a free is awarded so there’ll be no stealing 2,3 or ten yards by the free taker!
