Athlone Town's 238-day wait for a league win is over

Goals from Kealan Dillon and Sean Brennan were enough to see off UCD.

Athlone Town 2-0 UCD

ATHLONE TOWN CLAIMED their first league win of the season, much to the relief of new boss Keith Long and their long suffering fans.

Town beat the Students 2-0 this evening in a home tie and quadrupled their points tally for the season. Second-half goals from Kealan Dillon and Sean Brennan were enough to end a 238-day wait for a league win.

UCD really should have led going into the break as Gary Burke had an effort deflected wide and Chris Mulhall saw an effort hoofed off the line.

Former Ireland U19 player Dillon was on hand to tap in from close range after the break. Team-mate Mark Hughes dinked a chip over Conor O’Donnell in the UCD goal but it came back off the crossbar. Dillon did not hesitate and he rifled home.

Dillon put a cross into the box, just past the hour mark, and Brennan scored with a low drive after latching onto a nod down.

Without a win all season, Town dropped back in the closing stages and survived the occasional flurry. Their three point haul closes the gap on second last UCD to nine points.
