James Tarkowski’s own goal sealed the result for the Premier League challengers eight minutes from time.

Elswhere, Sunderland overcame third-tier Carlisle United 2-1 at the Stadium of Light to take their place in round four.

Adam Johnson put Sunderland ahead with a 34th-minute free-kick and then supplied the cross from which Sean O’Hanlon put through his own goal after Matty Robson had levelled the scores.

A 90th-minute strike from 20-year-old French midfielder El-Hadji Ba completed victory for Gus Poyet’s men.

Still in the hat

Port Vale threw away a two-goal lead as Plymouth Argyle claimed a 2 – 2 draw to force a replay.

Gavin Tomlin and Tom Pope opened up the lead for the League One side. However, the work was far from done and League Two Argyle battled back in the second half with goals from Reuben Reid and a lovely chip over the keeper by Ben Purrington.
