ASMIR BEGOVIC WAS the calmest at the Britannia Stadium this afternoon after a 90-yard punt gave the goalkeeper his first Premier League goal.
Begovic launched an upfield clearance after just 12 seconds of play and watched as it was helped on its way by a favourable wind and a hefty bounce. The ball looped over Southampton goalkeeper Artur Boruc and put Stoke 1 — 0 up. Jay Rodriguez later equalised for the Saints as the game ended in a draw.
Speaking to Sky Sports after the match, Begovic reflected that ‘it was just one of those things’. The Bosnian international commented, “It got fortunate with a good bounce and the pitch was still a bit wet. Tricky conditions with the wind and it went in. I feel bad for Artur Boruc as it’s never nice to be on the receiving end of one of those. It was good for us as it gave us a goal and helped us get a goal in the end.”
The goalkeeper added, “I just tried to get it forward as there was a bit of pressure on me. It kept carrying and carrying due to wind, bounced and was one of those fortunate things for us this time.”
It almost seems unfair to only award six Fantasy Football points for a goalkeeper’s goal.
“I don’t want to remember that at all,” remarked Southampton goalkeeper Boruc. “It that kind of situation you cannot do too much. I should do, to be honest, because this is my job and I should predict this situation. I the very end, I didn’t do anything and it cost us two points.
“I’m sorry for the lads… what can I say? I promise I’ll get those two points back.”
