Down and Armagh fight back to grab draws in Division 2 ties

Down finished level against Monaghan while Armagh ended up drawing with Louth.

IT FINISHED ALL square in Newry and Drogheda in the two remaining games today in Division 2 of the Allianz football league.

Down came back from a six-point deficit to draw 1-11 to 0-14 against Monaghan at Páirc Esler with Conor Maginn’s goal crucial for James McCartan’s side.

Monaghan made all the running in the first-half with Paul Finlay and goalkeeper Rory Beggan amongst their point-scorers as they raced into a 0-7 to 0-2 lead midway through the opening period.

At half-time they were in front by 0-10 to 0-4 with Jack McCarron and Christopher McGuinness adding further points.

Down’s prospects improved notably in the second-half with Conor Maginn bagging a vital goal. But Monaghan were still three points clear with five minutes left at 0-14 to 1-8.

Yet their hopes for victory were dashed as Jerome Johnston and two converted frees by Donal O’Hare to rescue a draw for Down.

Louth looked to be in control of their match at the Gaelic Grounds when they lead by eight points with 15 minutes remaining. But they lost their way as Armagh hit 1-5 without reply to tie the teams at 1-13 to 0-16 by the final whistle.

Louth were 0-10 to 0-4 ahead at the break with Paddy Keenan supplying some excellent scores. They built on that position and looking to have a commanding advantage when Colm Judge pointed in the 55th minute as they went 0-16 to 0-8 in front.

But then Armagh notably fought back. Stefan Forker’s goal ignited their revival with Tony Kernan striking vital points, including the levelling effort, to crown Louth’s comeback.
