Another one bites the dust: Cooney resigns from Faithful role

The Offaly football boss has stepped down after a disappointing National League campaign.

PAT TEEHAN, CHAIRMAN of the Offaly county board has this morning issued a statement indicating they have ‘reluctantly’ accepted the resignation of football boss, Gerry Cooney.

Offaly finished rock bottom of Division three, losing six of their seven games.

Only, now ousted, Val Andrews’ Cavan side were beaten – a 0-11 to 1-10 win over a month ago.

While the county could not be reached for comment this morning, the statement from Teehan is outlined on the county’s website as saying:

Gerry and his management team had a lengthy meeting with the panel of players last night and afterwards Gerry tendered his resignation in what he described as the best interest of Offaly Football.

The departure is the latest in a small series of managerial casualties falling out from the league. Following the heave against Andrews he reacted swiftly and offered to step away in the best interests of the county and with Cooney echoing that sentiment it is believed that the meeting was a move against the Meath-man after just over five months in charge.

The county statement continued with:

Pat Teehan thanked Gerry for his loyalty, commitment and 100% dedication to the long term future of Offaly football.

The Faithful county will now begin the search for an interim manager to see them through the Championship which, for them, begins against Kildare on June 17.

I’ll try my best to increase pressure on McEnaney, says Murphy

@Eoin Murphy: was there in 2007 to see Inter v Sampdoria. €17 ticket. Inter had Figo, Adriano, Zlatan, Zanetti etc… But the atmosphere was unreal. Decent price flights, hotel and the above price ticket. Do it!

@Baldy Boo Bolingoli: it was planned by a friend. It is extremely affordable if you book it right. Such an impressive stadium.

2-0 doesn’t truly reflect the absolute dominance Inter had most of the game outside of maybe 10-15 mins towards end of first half. Hit the woodwork 3 times, marginally disallowed goal for offside, donnarumma pulling off a number of great saves, could easy have been an absolute hammering.
