Andy Murray battles back from the brink to reach Wimbledon semi-final

The Scot was on the brink of an early exit before regrouping to win in five taut sets.

ANDY MURRAY FOUGHT back from two sets to love down before eventually ousting Spain’s Fernando Verdasco in the Wimbledon Men’s quarter-finals.

The Scot lost the first two sets 6-4 and 6-3 and constantly berated himself over the course of a difficult first 90 minutes. The next hour and a half saw him level up the match as Murray won 6-1 and 6-4.

Verdasco, who came into the tie unseeded, managed to raise his game in the deciding set, forcing Murray to serve to stay in the match at 5-4 down. The home favourite held his serve and broke the Spaniard in the next game. Murray served out the match to love to complete a remarkable turnaround.

He will now face 24th seed Jerzy Janowicz, who beat Polish compatriot Lukasz Kubot in straight sets, 7-5 6-4 6-4, earlier today. Murray described the Pole as ‘one of the best young players in the game today’.

Speaking to the BBC post-match, Murray praised Verdasco’s serving abilities but flagged his willingness to ‘chase down every single ball from the first to the last’. He added:

It was a combination of things. Fernando played extremely well in the first set. In the second set, I made some poor decisions and bad mistakes. He served fantastically well and is playing like he was a few years ago [when he was in the world top 10].”

Murray added, “I know how good these players are. It’s everyone else saying that they are not.”

The Dunblane native takes on Janowicz in Friday’s semi-final, which will be preceded by the other last four tie between Juan Martin del Potro and number one seed Novak Djokovic.
